M.I. doubleParticipantDance!!!
All the way!For a smooth mix, CD Players.
For the DJ that scratches, WAX!
But, nothing beats the feeling of wax on your fingers while you’re mixing at a party.AdSense 336x280June 28, 2006 at 2:24 pm #592337

In SilicoParticipantIn general, I find it’s better not to mix Hip Hop as this perpetuates the stereotype(at least in my eyes) that you aren’t a very creative DJ and you’re just playing what you KNOW all the very stupid people and drunk College students want to hear.
What to do if you happen upon a Hip Hop record or CD:
1. CAREFULLY take the record or CD, and put it on a hard, flame-resistant surface such as concrete or asphalt – a parking lot or street is perfect for this.
2. Thoroughly soak the offending track in a flammable substance, usually Kerosene or Lighter Fluid works best.
3. Ignite the offending material. Please be careful, as flammable liquids can be quite volatile. Excercise caution such that you do not get burned.
4. Encourage people to break, damage, and walk on the offending material after it has extinguished. You will find this task to be easier if a, they are not DJs, and b, they are or used to be ‘Ravers’.
5. If you happen to encounter a Hip Hop dj, feel free to express your views in whatever language you deem appropriate. If they are not amicable to your opinion, and decide to be violent(as many Hip Hop djs do) do not hesitate to jab a Glowstick into their eye to teach them a lesson.
Well, that’s all! Be sure to have fun, be safe, and give those Hip Hop djs a good "Thanks for ruining music as we know it" for me…

acheadKeymasterI think you can mix whatever the hell you want.. You can get away with a lot of hiphop that doesn’t come off as uncreative.. And If you are using CDs, you can easily remix, edit, mash up or whatever, the tracks you want to play, and that’s creativity for you..
I like to play hiphop, just never anything you will hear in a club..
I have seen some pretty amazing scratch sets on CDJs also, but me personally, I am thinking of picking up a vinyl turntable and going with 3 decks..
Using the vinyl just for scratching..I have seen a lot of these kind of posts over the last while on different forums.. And I think the answer in short is,
It doesn’t matter.. Do what you want, play what you want..Don’t let someone tell you that dance music is better to spin, or that hiphop is uncreative..
Do your own thing..There are plenty of DJs spinning the same dance music night in and night out, doing absolutely nothing special every other transition is a back spin etc..
Just don’t let the GENRE of music you play define you..

I know all you hip-hoppers like to talk like 50 Cent, but damn – are you so blunted-out that you really think it’s impressive to speak and spell like someone who got hit in the head with a 9-Iron one-too-many times?
I’m sorta playin, but at the same time I’m not. It’s just awful….

FunkLogikParticipantFor the convenience of digital and the feel of wax, get a laptop and Rane Serato Scratch Live. It has a *near* perfect scratch algorithm (better than Final Scratch), and is easy to fire up and use.
Personally, I will never use "CDJ" units. I like to actually be able to "touch" my music
AdSense 336x280August 14, 2006 at 6:01 pm #596051
JuggernautParticipantyou’re limiting yourself there dear.
as long as cdj’s are bog standard in most big clubs you’ll be at a disadvantage…don’t turn your nose up to them, you can still feel the music with them (800’s/1000’s) and possibly increase creative ideas into reality with them. that’s just my opinion tho.AdSense 336x280August 15, 2006 at 12:18 am #596071

SL1200’s are still the standard, with Pioneer CDJ-1000MK2’s present in some clubs and not others. CDJ’s are GREAT ways to rip an original track and play it "that night" for a crowd, if it’s something that you’ve been personally producing. It can save MUCHO bucks on getting a single or an acetate pressed just to play your stuff on a gig.
But as far as depending upon CDJ’s for an entire night’s worth of music? Not happening any time soon.
However, I will say that the Numark CDX unit is actually the CLOSEST CDJ replica of an *actual* turntable that I’ve ever used. We have one set up at Sam Ash where I work, and I *constantly* beat on this thing and abuse it, and it keeps on ticking….it’s a turntable-sized CDJ with an actual 12" HIGH-torque direct-drive motor that has an almost uncanny vinyl feel and response. I’d actually rather use that thing during a gig than either of the Pioneer units.

…why do i post when i’m half a sleep?See now, when you said CDJ, i took that as a general "i won’t touch CD players in general….ever"…hence why i said you’d be limiting yourself, obviously in a good few years cdj’s…or cd players in general…will be obselete as well.
Generally speaking in most decent club set ups (from what i’ve seen) there will be cd players present in addition to the usual turntables. Again, from what i’ve seen, most are usually CDJ 1000’s (or top range dual cd players). I started off using numark Axis 9’s but the club i work at have 1000’s and other places i’ve been to have the same so thought (and was told) they were "standard". I’ve had a play on the CDX, and didn’t like it..the only thing i liked about numark equipment is the ability to hold pitch whilst changing tempo (although the algorithm or whatever is used isn’t that good and deteriorates the sound every now and then). if Pioneer had rotating platters and pitch hold, i’d be happy. My personal perference though would be the Denon DNS3500.
To each their own, though.
