gstillingreeceParticipantevery studio in the world sports a pair of Yamaha NS10’s….you know the ones with the white cones. You see them in every set-up. Although most engineers dislike them. The best sounding near fields (for the money) are ‘Tannoy reveal’. I believe they are available as active cabs, so no need for amp. And they look the mutts nuts aswel.

by far the "best" monitors in my opinion…EVER! Sure they cost as much as the down payment on a house but bar none the best ive ever heard!

tribalmaniakParticipantI use krk rokit 6 (powered) and i’m very satisfied with this monitors, but a subwoofer is needed for a good sound.

DJ LeGitlinParticipantjust wondering where the best place to pick up monitors is? im currently shopping for some but not sure where i should purchase them from
AdSense 336x280March 18, 2009 at 5:25 pm #665627
captain_kickerParticipantI’ve also got a pair of the KRK RPG2 6"…they sound really clean for the money, crisp highs, even mids and a nice tight low end (for 6" monitors). I had the M-audio BX8’s but found that the highs were just too sibilant, in all honesty the KRK is a better monitor imo. The Event monitors are quite nice as well, my buddy has a pair and he wouldnt trade them for anything. I found my KRK’s on ebay with free shipping, which is key, b/c they weigh quite a bit and you’ll end up spending another 50-75 bucks just for shipping.

GMoneyParticipantI’ve also got the KRKs, they work well enough for me.

DJ LeGitlinParticipantwhats a fair price?

captain_kickerParticipantDJ LeGitlin wrote:whats a fair price?Theres a pair on Ebay right now for $399 w/ free shipping. Zzounds sells em for $199 a pop too with free shipping. I dont think you will find a new pair for less than $200 per monitor.

CDAParticipantI use a couple of wharfdale’s, very impressed with the quality, they’ve never once distorted and they’re 2 years old now! Considering I produce DnB at high vol that’s saying something!

estaloca311Participantdon’t mean to sound like a dick (really) but asking what are the "best" monitors is an excercise in futility. Your best bet would be to go to a place where they sell a good selection of speakers along with one of your favorite tracks in original CD and test loads of them at different volumes and then choose what sounds better to your ears.
I’ve heard of pros swearing by their meager M-Audio 5s or (god forbid) Truths. Monitor selection is a really subjective personal choice kind of thing.
On the KRKs , I’ve only tested the 8s and the subwoofer and to my ears they sound amazing for the price if a little bass shy for their size but with the sub they really shine.

Thats a really valid point, but you may have been taking the question a little too literally.. Of course its an excercise in futility b/c like you said, its all personal preference. I think he was really just asking advice on what a good quality monitor at a competitve price is. I think it goes w/o saying that most monitors priced in the thousands of dollars sound better than a pair of Maudio or KRK. Thats a no brainer. But again, that is really sound advice as far as going to guitar center (or wherever) and testing them yourself.

[/quote:3e42n7jp]True. I am merely reinforcing the point that there many little differences even in the lowest price spectrum in n/f monitors. All the monitors i have mentioned (M-Audio, Behringer and KRK) are in fact considered cheap by monitor standards. I am using two pairs myself (to A/B between the mixes) and one of them is the M-Audio BX5 (my first monitors, kinda crap but i know their sound by heart by now). But the moral of the story is this. Any producer’s main monitoring device are their EARS. Some people’s ears are so advanced that they can pump out almost perfect mixes with even Altec PC speakers (for those of you with a dubstep bend , Ramadanman a pioneer of the scene and a man of huge bass, does just that. He mixes on either Altec-Lansig pc speakers or an old beat-up Technics stereo.)

OldSchoolDJParticipantgonna put in my $0.02 worth for the JBL LSR4328’s the automatic room correction feature makes them conform to the acoustics of any environment. it really helps in a home studio that may not be the ideal acoustic environment. they are a little costly – but worth it in my opinion!
agree with those above – there is no substitute for going to Guitar Center and previewing all of the different models and types for yourself.

cosmicjiveParticipantM-Audio BX8s always bump my music well, I make a lot of bass heavy IDM and Glitchy breaks. I would shy away from the BX5s though, they dont have accurate low end reproduction and I never get a proper mix out of them.

Have a look at Quested or Genelec.
They have some classic models which last the test of time
