dedtonyParticipantRemember, not so long ago, when we had music SUPERSTARS, musical entertainers that, everytime we turned on the tv or the radio, we’d hear or see SOMETHING about them? I’m typing in terms like Eminem, Master P, and even in the pop world like Britney Spears…It seems like the music scene has gotten so watered down and formulaic that there’s no place for much creativity and originality, and without these two aspects, there is little room for a new or far different sound, therefore there is a suppression of any place for a SUPERSTAR…I guess the last superstars I can name, in recent history, due to a differing from the norm sound, would be Outkast…and THEY GOT IMMENSE media attention…In fact, I got sick of that "I like the way you move" track…Never got to hating "Hey Ya" though…and now they’ve got that movie "Idlewild" on the way…which looks oddly cool..Ok, now to my questions, after much discussion: Who do you believe is today’s musical superstar? Is there room in today’s media for superstars? Who would you like to see make a comeback and gain or regain their superstar status? Thanks in advance for your answers!

JuggernautParticipant…the musical superstar died when the music industry created a dead set pop music celebrity churning formula…
I also blame the disposable culture that’s taken the western (and to some point westernised eastern) culture by storm. so called "superstars" are only covered by the media if they draw in crowds/numbers/money. once that cash cow’s been sucked dry, they move on.So, to conclude….I like drum n bass and Ben n jerry’s phish food..

You seem to be referring mostly to hip hop and since I don’t know that much about it I don’t know how creative they are right now.
At least in dance music I feel there is still a lot of creativity going on and plenty of new songs every day. Sure there is the standard tunes made just for crossover success but they are needed too.And when it comes to superstars there are still some like Madonna and bands like U2. And in my opinion all the big old bands are still selling out huge arenas everywhere they go so they should be considered superstars. But music industry is different today and I think there is harder to find those new stars that will go on to have the "super" status. It’s more about 15 minutes of fame today.
