ginjagaidenParticipanthi guys , I understand that this is a little unrelated to what we usually talk about on here . but me and my girlfriend disagree on whether a wasp could actually sting a fly …..I say it can , she says it couldn’t . lets have a vote up and then we’ll put it to the test (im not sure how yet)

Mr FletchParticipantCongratulations! You have just won the "Random post of the month" award!! *applause*
lol!
Seriously though, that is one messed up debate you and your girl were having! But in order to continue the debate, I side with you, and agree it could happen, but only in controlled conditions. Maybe if you managed to trap a fly and a wasp in a pint glass, and agitate the wasp before it gets in there, then I reckon it can be done!
lol.

ginjagaidenParticipantthat was definately my logic behind it….lets get them in a glass and get it on!!!

Mr FletchParticipantlol!
I wonder how many hits something like that would generate on youtube lol!

ajtmexParticipantIt’s entirely possible, wasps are like natures assassins. There’s a certain species of wasp for most different pests that exclusively hunt that particular pest, including the American Cockroach, different spiders and tarantulas, crop destroying bugs like boll weevils and certain flies etc.

percytomParticipantwasps are like the chavs of the insect world. theyre always up in ur face. i recon they cud sting a fly

djgilliganParticipantWasps are ass fucking toss pots, im not that into flys either. I reckon they’d start plotting against you, one of them would distract you by doing the can-can, and the other would dig through the table, and they’d both escape. They’d then fly into the nearest window and make those annoying noises, and drive you insane till you had to go out to get some fly spray. While you were away, the wasp will go and hide, and the fly will find some fresh fruit and start to eat it. As soon as you get back in, the wasp comes out of hiding, and stings you one the finger tip, so that it is really painfull to press the button on the fly spray. The fly and wasp high-fives.

Haha Great post. A sequal to ‘A Bugs life’ perhaps?AdSense 336x280September 2, 2009 at 12:02 am #671393
pablo blueParticipantA wasp could easily take a fly any day!
Yesterday I witnessed (with my own two eyes) a wasp taking off holding a worm (granted, it was a very small worm) and it landed and began eating the worm.
I have a massive phobia about wasps, but I must admit, I was transfixed by this gory display of the stripey ninja’s strength (and appetite)!I also am more than a little bit scared of spiders and was dismayed to hear that there is a "wasp spider"…… it’s a spider that is yellow and black like a wasp!
Now lets get one of them in the glass too and have some sort of tag team thing going on!
AdSense 336x280September 2, 2009 at 3:58 pm #671413
ginjagaidenParticipantgranted a black and yellow spider is scary, but it would be even scarier if it had a sting aswell ( how terrifying ) a flying 8 legged spider wasp!!

HyperstateParticipantWow what a great idea!!! I have been mooting the principle of Insect Wars to my friends for ages, thinking about how a hi-tech tv series could be made of it.
If only they could make wee little lasers and cyborg attachments for the insects, that’d be awesome.

nielozParticipantI think it can, wasps can eat them, so why not sting them! haha

vice versesParticipantit is probably less about physical restraints, and more about wether chemically it would affect the fly…
we get stung because the "sting" has an allergic reaction to our immune system, yet wether a fly has those same reactions is the question!

[/quote:2ejr9nvd]yes very true.. the needle would penetrate a fly.. but the "sting" itself is debatlable wether it would haver a reaction.

MC_MirthParticipantTo answer this question, y’all need to check out Japanese wasps.

BassTekk! [Hoodzy]Participantin comparrison to both sides a wasp has been known to sting flies

but…Due to the venom in the wasps stinger the fly is dead within 5 seconds

(im a bit of a science geek
)AdSense 336x280September 29, 2009 at 9:10 pm #672441
feli1980Participanti reckon it could… they r proper killers
AdSense 336x280September 30, 2009 at 6:37 am #672455
ajtmexParticipantNot only that, but these things usually target a certain species specific to theirs. They only really stings other things only if it feels threatened in some way, other than that,If they are attacking a fly, it probably has a reason. It sure as hell isn’t attacking it because it’s there or because it feels threatened by it, therefore its venom must have a certain chemical make up specific to what ever fly it’s attacking.
AdSense 336x280October 1, 2009 at 5:50 pm #672487
DJUPLIFT25Participanti definetly think so if it was threatened

Too IntegratedParticipantFlies are not natural enemy’s of the wasps are they? If not they wouldn’t sting flies I think..

ajtmexParticipantToo Integrated wrote:Flies are not natural enemy’s of the wasps are they? If not they wouldn’t sting flies I think..True, however, due to the OP’s original statement [quote:2703kw3z]…me and my girlfriend disagree on whether a wasp could actually sting a fly…[/quote:2703kw3z], the argument is whether or not a wasp COULD sting a fly rather than WOULD.
My observations of said species concludes that even though the event of a wasp stinging a fly is not likely, the wasp is certainly capable of stinging one.
It’s like a F-22 taking on a cropduster.
AdSense 336x280October 8, 2009 at 10:50 am #672666
Too IntegratedParticipant^ Offcourse it’s possible.. Wasps "could" sting a flie.. then again they "could" sting anything… So if we interpret that question literally this debate has no meaning.. The question itself is formulated wrong to have a good debate about it…
AdSense 336x280October 8, 2009 at 10:59 am #672667
ajtmexParticipant^^^ Which renders this whole thread useless. o_O
