DruttenParticipantThanks for the methods, will try phase cancellatipn method right away….anyone knows if the tool "Invert" in Logic Pro is the one to use in order to invert the phase?

acheadKeymasterHi, I’m new here… I did a quick search but couldn’t find anything direct on the forums, so…
Not necessarily relevant, but I didn’t want to start a new thread, but after vocal extraction, is there any way to convert an mp3 file to midi that anyone knows of?
AdSense 336x280January 13, 2007 at 4:53 pm #609835
newpowersoulmateParticipantThanks for posting this topic. I’ll have to give option #1 a try.

serg sniperParticipantWow, Thank you for that great information.. Has anyone ever tried to extract an acapella using the invert plugin protools has. I did and I had a decent result but it wasn’t as clean as I’ve heard other extracted acapellas sound. Anyway if anyone uses protools and has advise on how to make the process more efficient I would love to see how it’s done.

acheadKeymasterDis thread has realy helped me, but I still don’t know how to fully do this invert/flipping thing. Is it possible to do this on virtual DJ, or do you have to use sony acid pro? Thanks.

acheadKeymasterJust a quick question… how much of a difference does it make if your using an mp3 instead of a wave file? does using an mp3 loose any stereo panning etc as when its encoded that would make it pointless to try to use centre channel nockout etc? ….. Cheers

ajjoh5ParticipantCan you please explain further anyone the knock out method.
I have used the phase inversion which works, but without the instumental i am a little lost with creating acapellas.AdSense 336x280January 16, 2007 at 3:02 am #610197
acheadKeymasterdoes anyone have a nice tutorial on how to do this??? i have pro tools 7 on my mac, but wondering what kinda programs would work best for doing this type of thing.

eddyroxParticipantIs not always possible to erase all frequences that you want…beacause not al frequences are recorded on a different track each one
AdSense 336x280January 16, 2007 at 3:00 pm #610239
acheadKeymasterthe phase cancellation works perfectly. if you have the perfectly right files.
I’ve run into roadblocks every time i’ve tried that.
I have an instrumental version of an album along with the original album, but they are different waveforms.
and boy, that pisses me off. it won’t cancel.
AdSense 336x280January 16, 2007 at 5:18 pm #610261
lexgunzParticipantI can never get the phasing method to work it jus sounds extra messed up
AdSense 336x280January 16, 2007 at 5:53 pm #610264
acheadKeymasterthat happens when the waveforms are different
AdSense 336x280January 16, 2007 at 7:58 pm #610281
acheadKeymasterOke, I’m going to try it out. Many thanks for the info….helps me a lot on the road of acapellas…

acheadKeymasterHMMM….DIDN"T WORK!!! I am currently using wavelab essential and I’m inverting the instrumental and then mixing it into the vocal version and…..NOTHING! I still hear the vocal with a little flange effect to the muisc….HELP!!!!!!!

This tutorial shows what happens when they aren’t lined up right. It is the same effect that you described.

BenWesthillParticipanti try this method and doest march
AdSense 336x280January 25, 2007 at 5:21 am #611131
jpodtbcParticipanti tried phase cancellation with what i thought was good quality mp3s but no deal. especially not if ripped from vinyl.
the knockout plugin was much better though…which i assume does phase cancellation plus more.
AdSense 336x280January 26, 2007 at 12:38 am #611211
acheadKeymasterNice!! It works Fine!!

acheadKeymasterhey that sounds cool thanks
AdSense 336x280January 26, 2007 at 9:27 pm #611310
jaydcParticipantVery good method. Wroks for me.. the trick is to have the instrumental. For tracks that don’t. I try lifting the vocals by copying parts of the track with no vocals and appling the same method..
AdSense 336x280January 29, 2007 at 4:19 pm #611589
hersimpParticipant
1. THE PHASE CANCELLATION METHOD
Get an instrumental of a song, invert the phase (sometimes refered to as flipping), and mix it with the original.. If done right everything besides the vocal is cancelled out. You can do this in any sequencer like cubase or acid.. The instrumental must be excatly the same time/pitch however. and mp3s might not work if they are badly encoded. Zoom right in to see the 2 waveforms next to each other (look for kick drum hits) and line them up.[/quote:3juykzqg][b:3juykzqg]This works extremely good. Tried it many times with success.
Unfortunately it’s very much things that needs to fit
The Instrumental have to be in the exact same volume and exact same length as the original version with vocals
Many producers make the instrumental different with a few small changes (in length or variation)
to avoid acapella extractions
Downloaded files will mostly not work since the quality probably are different
Own cdm rips always work if everything matches
Outta my 122 cdm’s it have been two extractions that have turned out perfect, hehe[/b:3juykzqg]
2. THE KNOCKOUT METHOD
using ‘knock0ut’ (http://www.freewebs.com/st3pan0va/) you can spectrally subtract one piece of audio from another. Start by extracting the centre mono of a track (soundforge or cooledit will do it with the pan/expand feature). then try and make an instrumental out of loops from the track and ‘knock them out’ of the vocal parts. This can work even if the instrumental isn’t excatly the same as the song.[/quote:3juykzqg][b:3juykzqg]This is also a nice alternative option, but it also depends that everything ,as I mentioned above, matches.
I’ve never made this work perfectly, but it have turned out better this way than most other extraction methods[/b:3juykzqg]AdSense 336x280 -
