djshadesukParticipantWell, this is my first attempt at a trance track (I know this is the house section but where the hell am I supposed to put trance anyway?!). Its far from finished and is just a short little preview only just to gather opinions…
It uses a sample from a very well known film as the basis for the breakdown… I have a feeling the timing of the point in which the beat kicks back in could be adjusted and perhaps the filtered kick could slowly fade towards the end too… but I’m not sure!
Please don’t slate it for having no melody. I’m not sure if it even needs one… It may get one during a second breakdown where a shorter version of the sample will be used but we’ll see about that later!
All opinions as the start/basis of a new track are welcome… Good, bad or indifferent!!

ChunkyEatsMyDinnerParticipantFantastic job so far, I would certainly consider playing the finished track, the sounds all work really well with each other.
I agree about where the beat comes back in, I reckon shift it back a bit just to give a little more suspense after the sample.
Then add another 3-4 minutes to the end, crack glowstick and your there

Wow! I never imagined that kind of feedback for my first attempt at a genre!DJMasterX wrote:It has to be said that I don’t know much about tranceNeither do I! LOL

[quote quote="DJMasterX":2tlripk1]Really clever use of the sample too, it sounds great.
Can’t wait to hear the finished version![/quote:2tlripk1]
I’ve been really wanting to use that sample for ages now and this just seemed the absolute perfect project to use it with, it sits really well with a trance track. Glad I’m not the only one who thinks so!

I think you just might be right about shifting the beat back to give it more suspense. Do you mean by shifting it a few seconds (of (almost) silence for example before hitting hard or drawing it out a little, almost as a second break down? If its the latter you’ve given me a great idea… Use the end of the sample as another break, go very quiet (possibly introducing some little gently melody) and give it a proper build before kicking back in.
Decisions, decisions!
I know it sounds like creating by committee but I’d rather make a track that would get played by others rather than just for my own amusement, I want to get it right! Unfortunately none of my friends are musical in the slightest and I don’t have the luxury of being able to sit in a ‘studio’ with a few musically inclined people who could say "Yeah, this bit works" or "This bit doesn’t"… Thank god for you guys and this forum!
I’ve gotta replicate the beat now though. Just to get the project started I was lazy and used a loop. I generally don’t do that because of its inflexability but this beat just inspired me for the overall tuff and dark sound. Shouldn’t be too hard, just very time consuming trying to match up the sounds of the kick, hats and snare. Will probably try filtering the beat to seperate the hats and kicks but that sounds too easy so probably won’t work!

Sounds like some kind of music making recipe! Haha

Big thanks to both of you guys for taking the time to give me your opinions, your feedback really means a lot to me!

Anyone else got any more?

otgParticipantYeah, I like it overall. You could cut the vocal at the point where Neo says "how this is going to begin" for the first breakdown, drop everything out at that point then come back in after 4 beats, then run the whole sample through in another breakdown towards the end. Just some ideas. Feel free to ignore.

DJGodiaNParticipantNice track.

djshadesukParticipantHey guys, thanks for all the feedback so far!
This is not a bump as there has been some major changes made to the breakdown and now the "Verse" (I say verse because I’ve now chopped and changed the sample to give it an almost lyrical feel beyond the breakdown)
Now, most things I write seem to come out sounding very hard and dark… so to break from the norm I’ve added a nice gated pad playing a nice little harmony in an attempt to lift the track up and make it sound a little more eurphoric. I’m not sure if its worked but I’m sure you lot will tell me either way!

As always your critical ears and honest opinions will be greatly appreciated!

otgParticipantHrm… listening for a third time… Lose the pad over the first part where Neo’s nattering away, that bit could do with being darker – no percs, just kick, bass and Neo. Perhaps fade the kick out through the whole section. After the first time he says ‘beginning’ and there’s the drop out, come back in with the bass, kick, loads of percs and the pad, but no vocal. Elongate that section, then fade out the percs and add in more vocal snippits. Don’t just repeat the same phrase, chop it up a bit, use different sections.
I have to say, however, I like the direction in which this is going.
