junoParticipantHas anyone heard about this? According to the way i was taught, two spaces go after a period or any full stop. Now…the "experts" are saying that its only one space. Who the F cares? I just recieved my final paper back and my professor took off points because I used two spaces instead of one.
Sounds like BS to most of you but if you’re a computer programmer or an English major its pretty freakin’ dumb. We can’t switch to the metric system but we can change how many spaces go after a period. Great Job!

Reggie_p75ParticipantYep..
I was also taught 2 spaces after a fullstop (period) when ending a sentence (but not after abbreviations), and 1 after all other punctuation. So your Prof. (1 space here) is tosspot. (New sentence – 2 spaces) I’d ask for my work to be re-checked. evaluated or whatever and ask for clarification on the correct manner of composing work.
Make a big issue of it!!

PixelsaurParticipantI was also taught two spaces after a period, one space after a comma, but I’ve reverted to the one space method because, honestly, I haven’t been corrected so far…

HiBeats ProductionsParticipantI am no expert but I believe one space is the norm. Wether it’s right or not, that’s what I was taught and I think that’s what the majority of people do when typing.
…the people that still type properly anyway…

YoungVitoParticipantit is kinda strange though, why 2? is it really needed?
this is the first ive heard of thisAdSense 336x280June 8, 2009 at 10:39 pm #668541
CheapParticipantI’ve always done one space. I feel like two spaces is kind of unnecessary unless you’re trying to elongate a paper.

dillonlongParticipantTwo spaces is definitely the norm for academic papers. Publications generally use one space.

djstylesParticipantI prefer 1, but have been told 2.

random1234567890ParticipantIn the days of the typewriter, people were taught to put two spaces after a fullstop (or period as some call it) because the spaces weren’t large enough and it could make the writing look cramped if you only used one space. My mother still uses two spaces because she was a secretary and always typed like that.
When people started using computer, they continued to do the double space after a fullstop, but eventually people realised that you don’t actually need to do that on computers, so they stopped doing it. Really, putting in two spaces is a waste of time because computers format it so the space is big enough.
That said, your prof is a complete douche for taking off points for something like that. You should take it back and kick up some dirt about it because that’s absolute BS.
