DJ Bobby VParticipantStrictly for DJing.
I started out with turntables but now I use cd’s.AdSense 336x280January 4, 2008 at 5:47 pm #640801
mixtill6ParticipantI have to say turntables (with a pc), I switched to Serato and have been using for about a year now. I love it and it feels like vinyl, but the 500 gig hard drive w/ over 20k songs is alot easier to lug around than a 80 rec bag.
Just started using Ableton Live, but it is not mixing by any means.
The pc is a dynamic tool in many ways for me, so that is why I have to say the both of them.

DJ Bobby VParticipantIt was hard for me to switch to CD’s because I was used to the heavy resistance of the vinyl, but once I got used to the lighter resiistance of the jog wheel the advantages of CD’s became apparent. Now(and I do miss vinyl) I love it.
Auto-cue
Instant start
Sampling
More control with the pitch
Reverse
I can edit/burn CDs (My pressing plant is broken!!)
They’re very light

AnonymousInactivei still want to learn to use Ableton Live…
AdSense 336x280January 21, 2008 at 7:53 pm #641657
AnonymousInactiveif your just doing some casual mixxing CDJ’s are nice. the hot cues on the CDJ 1000 MKIII are what realy make them able to do things a Technic can’t do.
that being said… I am a vinyl DJ (who has some hella good CDJ skillz) but heres some issues.
I can switch a vinyl waaay faster then it takes to put in a new cd.
I also can track to the middle of a song much faster on vinyl.
I also seriously can feel the "warmth" of the music using vinyl; the clarity of a CD seems sometimes … too clear.
Vinyl records still are one of the best ways to get new music first, vinyl only remixes and mashps, and you get designs on vinyl.
lastly,
CdJ’s are only TRYING to emulate vinyl.
i really like the classic feel of the Technic SLDZ-1200’s

bonnaventureParticipantI’m poor and DJ for fun rather than profit or whatever else. I just like making two songs sound cool with each outer. Therefore, I use a laptop, as it’s easy to use, and allows me to see mixing in a new light.
Plus, with all the mp3 blogs out there, I can hear great stuff, and grab whatever I REALLY like from beatport.
Ableton all the way.
AdSense 336x280February 8, 2008 at 3:23 pm #642939
def26xParticipantYou really can’t beat good old vinyl for djing.
But in saying that I use a laptop set up now, and I have so much fun using my midi controller to try out so many different ideas. I suppose computer allows you to focus on specific aspect?
AdSense 336x280February 12, 2008 at 3:06 am #643258

AdSense 336x280February 21, 2008 at 4:36 am #643856
slagmanParticipantTurnTables to spin and Comp to record and Cd to spread the Mix
AdSense 336x280April 5, 2008 at 10:44 am #647229
squeakaParticipantI used to be a 100% vinyl girl (for some time!)
I have a CDJ in the studio now and access so so much more music on MP3s so dabbling a bit in digital now.. It’s still not the same though

Having a long hard think about serato at the moment but I can’t run simplecast and serato on the same laptop anyway so currently practicing on the CDJ – hopefully i can catch up as I’m currently much better at mixing vinyl!
AdSense 336x280April 5, 2008 at 4:15 pm #647258
deevidParticipanti mostly play vinyl for the simple fact that most reggae/dancehall tunes are never released on CD, even if it’s coming more n more nowadays.
only time i play CD in a club is if im throwing in some dubplates or own remixes..AdSense 336x280April 5, 2008 at 6:09 pm #647263
latParticipantIve got a huge vynil collection, but Im going to have to choose CDs for this one.
AdSense 336x280April 7, 2008 at 3:01 am #647370
yaa digParticipanthow much are turntables and chords and also is it hard to learn?
AdSense 336x280April 7, 2008 at 4:47 am #647374
imakeblendzParticipanti used to use only vinyl, but now i prefer my numark CDX cd turntable, because it actually has a physical piece of vinyl that remains on the top all the time which is the same as a record. it scratches cd’s exactly the same as vinyl, and i can do alot more with them. eventually i want to buy serato, and just use that with my 1200’s. i use a computer right now to multitrack record my mixes.
AdSense 336x280April 8, 2008 at 8:11 pm #647487
imakeblendzParticipanti see where you’re coming from tdwigg…..im also an old school dj. but i also love to do creative things, and take my mixes to the next level…which is sumthin that can only be done with the new technology (because you would need like 5 arms to do it live haha).
i like to still use my old turntables, and combine it with new tech…..best of both worlds
AdSense 336x280May 5, 2008 at 9:45 pm #649135
cosmicjiveParticipantDepends on what you want to do. If youre into turntablism and scratching, theres no question. 1200’s. If you like the sound quality of CDs or already own a bunch of them, they can work great. Lots of my DJ buds use these. Pioneers all the way. I personally love mixing with Ableton. I can create all my originals and mix all through the same machine and it can give me the versatility of having a 6 turntable set up (4 for tracks and 2 for juggle slots) I’ve DJed with all the euipment, starting on 1200s when i was 13. I suggest trying all of them out and picking the one that feels most natural to you
AdSense 336x280July 9, 2008 at 12:56 pm #653151
DizzyfoolParticipantI use all 3 although I enjoy using CD turntables the most, they are easier than vinyl, but more fun that PC.
AdSense 336x280July 9, 2008 at 1:31 pm #653156
MichL*ParticipantPC DJing for small in-house parties (with friends or people i know well), its more comfortable and fun for my buddies to try out.

Real Vynil for real Parties, which was a long time ago for me, but its like riding a bike, if you know what i mean.
AdSense 336x280July 29, 2008 at 5:47 pm #654281
daft gamer2Participantvinyl for the win
AdSense 336x280July 30, 2008 at 1:01 am #654304
davefjParticipantI do love my 1200s but the area I DJ in mainly is the "alternative" area of things and CDs kinda took over a good few years ago. So I spent my time on CDJs and I gotta say they are great.
In March this year I moved onto Serato (with CDJs) and I haven’t looked back.
Loads of storage for all the music I could ever want, and more besides that. Plus lighter then Vinyl/CDs and music access is fantastic. All in all they all have their place, which you go for is a matter of personal preference
AdSense 336x280August 2, 2008 at 2:01 pm #654463
retrorespectParticipantI think you cant beat vinyl, but CDJ100’s are fantastic and even the CDJ400’s ive been on are good, I dont really get the point of using the laptop to Dj
AdSense 336x280August 5, 2008 at 7:09 pm #654731
TMParticipantthey all serve a purpose.
AdSense 336x280July 7, 2010 at 2:46 am #680831
cosmicjiveParticipantI would say use Ableton Live. Its lets you do everything turntables does minus the scratching (which I think is mostly annoying anyway) plus it lets you add in an array of other sounds. It’s more like composing a symphony than DJing and you can even DJ while playing MIDI instruments over it.
AdSense 336x280July 9, 2010 at 2:17 am #680880
ajtmexParticipantThis is quite the tough one. I never really got into the CD’s much. I absolutely love vinyl, but I’ll have to go with PC. I went straight from vinyl’s to PC. Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing like slapping a fresh 12 onto a platter, but there’s just too much stuff to carry around. 2 heavy tables, a mixer, and you’re entire vinyl collection… Or at least the good party stuff. It adds up. I go with the PC set up for convenience. I use the NS7 Serato Itch controller with a PC, mainly because the feel is so close to an actual vinyl, and all you’re music is on one HDD. Gee I miss the old days. It’s ok though, it’s all set up in my room so I’ll throw one down every now n then.
AdSense 336x280July 27, 2010 at 11:33 pm #681463
beakzParticipantTurn tables. Got to keep it real.
AdSense 336x280September 12, 2010 at 7:02 pm #682342
Light fixtureParticipantComputer. I’m utterly new but I find it’s easier for me over turntables… for now.
AdSense 336x280October 25, 2010 at 8:44 pm #683070
151095ParticipantI use CDs and USB sticks. That’s how i find it easist..
