mikeybee85ParticipantSo, I’ve used the inverted phase trick quite a bit, and am pretty satisfied with it.
I have run into a tricky little problem now, lol.
I have a DVD, ive extracted the film from it, now its a nice little .mp4 of the film, really good quality.
I’ve also extracted a SECOND track from the DVD, it is exactly the same as the original film, only it is just the score of the film. No dialogue, no foley/FX, just the score (background music, atmosphere, etc)So, theoretically, i could create a customized soundtrack for this film, as the Invert Phase trick *SHOULD* cancel out the music, and just leave the talking and effects
Now, i’ve imported both of these files into ableton, and disabled the video for track 1 (the original)
I’ve lined them up perfectly (as you would with an original MP3, and an instrumental MP3, to create an "acapella"), Ive added the UTILITY tool to track 2 (the score track), and inverted the phases.
Oddly enough, it has amplified the music, instead of cancelling it out.
Am i missing something? I have read that you have to add the UTILITY tool to both tracks, but i’ve never needed to do that.
Any help is appretiated,AdSense 336x280March 31, 2013 at 8:29 pm #697823

humco420ParticipantWere you able to figure this out? I’m having the same problem, in tutorials I’ve seen people just slap a utility on one of their two files, Phaze left and right, and bam, near perfect phase cancellation. I’m no newcomer to Ableton, currently using 9 Suite with at at least 5,000 $ worth of packs and such, but for the life of me I’ve never gotten this utility trick to work. I also make an attempt at Audacity, which has a plain jane "invert" button, but still only getting addition on the sound waves, no subtraction (that I can tell) and certainly no cancellation.
I’m wondering if maybe the songs have to be exact matches? I’ve been trying to pull Phil Oakeys Vocals from "Electric Dreams" (lovely 80’s synthpop), but the instrumental versions and the vocal versions only line up in parts, so I cut out the parts I needed and lined them up with their inst. counterparts. No luck. I’ve checked for vinyls, & there was never a single featuring the Acappella, so unless I can figure out how to do this cancellation trick, I might as well be face down in a puddle somewhere.
BTW: I’ve been making movie mashups myself, there’s nothing like rescoring and re-editing a film, loads of fun. PM if you wana talk!
