JuggernautParticipant…so a couple of days ago my attention was brought to Renoise. i downloaded the demo opened it, and passed out.
Being the audio/visual left-handed person i am (stereotype i know, so sue me, they’re based on truth anyway
) having to see a horde of numbers and letters made me think i’ve just opened up my laptop’s brain and seen how it ticks, when audio is concerend.Anyway, not phased..i’m going to try and learn/figure it out as it may well be more rewarding than sequencers and doesn’t chew through my ram.
What i was wondering is, other than the obvious (no need for a midi keyboard although can be used, different GUI lay out, different audio engine, just being a different ‘thing’ in general) what’s so good about a tracker. I’ve gone to the usual places in trying to understand trackers but there are still big holes that are hindering me making sense of all i’ve read.

sunnParticipantits not what you use but how you use it. A few mates of mine produce using trackers rather than standard sequencers with impressive results.
There are alot of them around buzz probably been the more popular in terms of online tutorials available so maybe you should try that instead.

I guess i’m wrong in saying a tracker versus a sequencer as a tracker basically is a sequencer but not in a contemporary sense…if that makes sense.SYN: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tracker
**edit: also, i’m on a mac and i don’t think buzz is mac compatible yet. I’m doing ok with Renoise as there’s a community for it and tutorials and stuff, was just curious as to whether anyone could kinda explain it more**

acheadKeymasterAbout pros and cons for trackers, one con for sure is that if you have a long sample playing and you stop the pattern then start it again halfway through, that sample will no longer be played because the sample has to pass through the trigger part of the gui (as in the old piano roll where music was played using cardboard inserts).
I use `Madtracker`on the PC as well as Live 5 and i find that each has its own best points.
Way back in the 80`s the Amiga had a tracker called `Protracker` which i got very used to so the move to `Madtracker`was a simple one then as i started to use Live i found it very difficult to get used to the sideways scrolling compared to the vertical scrolling of a tracker, also i think another plus for the tracker is the fact that if you have a piano part playing you can actually see the notes in the pattern as musical notes instead of the dots and dashes in a midi pattern and i can play the qwewrty keyboard quite well !
I wouldnt say that one is better than the other but as most trackers are at least cheap or maybe free they are worth a look.AdSense 336x280July 1, 2006 at 10:37 pm #592487
acheadKeymasterAs far as i know hexidecimal can be turned off in the settings of most trackers if not its juct a case of numbers 1-10 would become 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,a,b,c,d,e,f,10 and the same for the next set of numbers 20,21,22,23,24,25,26,27,28,29,2a,2b,2c,2d,2e,2f,30

JuggernautParticipantaye, which is one reason why i’m interested in using a tracker coz of the hexidecimal usage (although i would/do shiver at the thought of using it sometimes too).
I like that it’s got vertical scrolling as opposed to horizontal scrolling. it’s challenging to say the least coming from a traditional/classical score-reading background but maybe it’ll help get some creativity going again.
Just kinda wanted to know/see people’s opinions on trackers in general seeing i’m not familiar with the whole amiga generation/side of things

JuggernautParticipantfair play to you…i wasn’t aware of the whole amiga tracker years in the late 80’s. i was only ickle!
but yeah, it’s purely for electrical music…totally constructed. To be honest, trackers are still running strong at the mo…definately for drill n bass and other glitchy type elctronic music (something i’ve come across and am growing to like). So far, yeah i agree that there’s more depth with sequencers but the fact that you can use VST’s in them and a midi keyboard just puts creating electronic music in a different perspective.

vespesianParticipantThe learning curve for trackers – ok, I guess mean the ‘comfort’ curve is kinda steep – but once you get used to them – they’re actually fun – I still use Madtracker (alongside AP6) – for "dirty house" -and I tell ya – nothing’s more fun than f****** up a long vocal loop in a tracker (making the voice an instrument, filtering & flanging it, you should hear the results).
Tempo’s can be a bit of a pain – and you gotta have a wave editor RIGHT THERE – because, if you’re sample based, there’s gonna be a lot of trimming going.
Try out Madtracker – it’s incredibly cheap for what you get.
