Reggie_p75ParticipantOviously we’re all music lovers here n I always think there’s a point in life where u just hear A SOUND n wonder… ‘Wot the f**k was that!?’ (in a positive too) and think ‘I’m gonna look more into that..’
Now at the mo I can only think of when I was a kid (about 10-11) n heard Kraftwerk n Tangerine Dream at a friends house n heard really hot air shifting basses n vocoders n thought, I gotta get some more of this
All I could think of was ‘That sounded like the Cylons….’ as my friend tried his attempt at scratching his dad’s Kraftwerk album
Who, wot , why when n where did u hear THAT sound!?

dave_raveParticipantThere was this sample used in a beck song…I think it was in "Rental Car" from the album Guero. The song’s all hip-hop-y with these nice country-esque guitars, and all of a sudden these girls that sounded like they just popped out of a 50’s tv commercial started doing this choral bit. it was wonderful!

gcone81ParticipantFor me, it’d have to be a kick drum that, when it hits, makes the volume of the rest of the track go down as if the bass portion of it overloaded the track. I can achieve similar results but have always wondered how the pros do it.

80’s synth strings. I love that sound, and have never found a VST that can produce it right. Either too pad-ish or too solo violin, and no amount of tweaking gets me that sound. I heard an A-Ha album, and that was it.
Another sound I absolutely love is that synth brass sound from the 80’s. I haven’t been able to fond anything like that either.

1 mix, bass kick or bass portion separated from main elements of track, 2 compressors, pre-mixer or similar, final mixer…
1. Separate the bass kick or bass portion of your track, compress (make it beefy but not hard) and feed into a pre-mixer (or similar) on 1 stereo channel.
2. Lower the levels of the rest of the whole mix to 50% (or experiment).
3. Feed the rest of the mix into the pre-mixer (or similar) onto another stereo channel.
4. AFTER the pre-mixer feed into the 2nd compressor with a high Ratio (really levels the sounds off), try either a high or a low Threshold (thats the unsure part so experiment), slow Attack and fast Release (settings I use on the Reason compressor)
5. Press play and experiment. Best results come from mid-tempo tracks 115-135BPM. Outside of those values is a playground where the compressor might respond too fast/slow to give the track that bouncing/pumping effect so experiment with the Attack/Release
Alternatively…
Save a mix with a fat bass portion, lower the rest of the track to 50% and export to a sample editor with a good compressor/limiter and mastering tools.. although ur ability to tweak the sound is limited.

The sounds (particularly the drum beats) on that album were something that hadn’t really been done before (and in my opinion haven’t been bettered since).
The Chemical Brothers’ drum beats always impress me too. They have become very commercial now, but "Dig Your Own Hole" always has a soft spot in my musical heart.

random1234567890ParticipantMy "wtf was that!" moment was about five years ago.
I was in a theatre (backstage) and one of the TV channels showed random music videos, but without the song names.
That’s when I first heard Hooverphonic’s "Mad About You". As soon as it started I just… wow. The video is pretty much incredible as well, but it was just the sound; the massive sweeping strings… I was in love.
One of the other videos on the channel was "All Mine" by Portishead. Another "WOW" moment.
It took me three years to find who made either of those songs. And I could not be more glad that I did

That’s pretty much how I came to love music, because before that I didn’t particularly care; mainly because 90s Radio Pop was pretty much shite.

Mad About You is an amazing track!
I went to see a band play in Leeds and was killing time by listening to music on the "listening posts" they have in big record shops and listened to Mad About You on there. I couldn’t get the money out of my pocket fast enough!!Another one of their tracks which has a great sound is "2 Wicky". Very Portishead (They actually go into Glory Box by Portishead when they play it live sometimes).
