phatplasticParticipantI was given a Final Scratch 1.5 unit back in 2003, but after my initial excitement I discovered it to be rather buggy and unreliable. For this reason I never took it out for any gigs because I just didn’t trust it. Fast forward to 2005 and I am given a Final Scratch 2 unit (yes, I do seem to be rather lucky with these…). Again, after some initial excitement I discovered the unit exhibited some rather annoying traits, and once again made the decision to not take it out for gigs – instead choosing to use Pioneer CDJ1000 units.
First a rant about software. Native Instruments have chosen to lock down the Final Scratch software with not only a serial number, but a authorisation code as well. Not only that, but this authorisation code is locked down to your hardware so if you upgrade your system, the software will no longer work until you request another key. This is nothing but a HUGE pain in the ass. I can understand doing this with a piece of software like Traktor, but doing this with Final Scratch makes no sense at all. The main reason being that the software is useless without the actual Final Scratch hardware!!? NI, what the hell are you thinking?
Last week I warmed up for DJ Vadim and he was using Serato Scratch Live, and I was impressed with the performance of the software. The day before I saw A-Skills at Fabric (the first time I have heard him play actually) and he was also using Scratch. Other DJs using Scratch include Jazzy Jeff, Diplo and DJ Spinbad to name just a few…
Enough is enough. I have decided to ditch Final Scratch 2 and finally become a Scratch whore. Goodbye Final Scratch. Hello Serato Scratch.

In SilicoParticipantYeah? Well you can’t play Pong with the Turntables with Final Scratch….
Ok, so there’s more to it than that. I would choose SSL over FS any day. I really like the response time and the layout, plus if you happen to have a TTM-57 to use, it’s UN-FREAKIN’-REAL. You can control the whole program without a keyboard or mouse using the knobs, switches, and function buttons on the mixer itself.
In summary, Eat It Final Scratch!

phatplasticParticipantOk, it arrived and I have to say I am BLOWN AWAY. Even though people think as these two tools as similar products, let me tell you… they are NOTHING alike. Final Scratch has NOTHING on Serato. I have been scratching away all evening and I just can’t get over how accurate it feels and sounds using both CD and vinyl to control. Today marks the point I stopped carrying around a big CD wallet and started carrying a laptop instead. I am so pleased
