GuitarplayainMDParticipantHow does everyone feel about screwed and chopped? For everyone who’s not familuar, screwed and chopped is a form of remixing where the song is slowed down with chops added. usually it’s southern rap slowed down but it’s crossed over in other genres.
Here’s a link to a better version of the definition.

Good stuff. How’d this subject get here? I put it in the downtempo/Chill area because I was thinking about posting some screwed and chopped mixes and I was wondering how the board feels about that.

The Test Pressings forums are for showing your work, and gaining feedback, not for discussion of a genre of music, this is why it was moved by myself earlier today. As you can see within the General Chat forum, there are discussions about all kinds of topics that do not belong within the Test Pressings forums.
Thank you.

reagansmistressParticipantEvery time I hear one, even new ones, it sounds just like a DJ Screw song I heard 5 years ago. I think there lacks originality in that style of remixing.

djdyvurseParticipantIt all depends where you’re from. East Coast cats usually don’t like S&C music. South and West coast cats love it. I’m from Houston… The originators of it. So of course i’m feelin’ it. But you should only mess with certain DJ’s doing it. If it ain’t DJ Screw, Michael 5000 Watts or to a lesser extent, Paul Wall, DJ Black or OG Ron C. It sounds garbage cause it’s just somebody jumping on our style. It also helps if you drink somethin to screw music. If you not feelin’ screw, maybe you should drink some codeine and call mein the morning… 3 N’ the Mornin’… Know what I’m Talkin’ ’bout? (If you ain’t from TX that mighta just flew over your head.)

MelParticipantYeah, the whole Screwed and Chopped thing is getting very played out. But, I doubt that it will go anywhere. Remember when R&B cats first started putting rap verses in their songs right after the bridge? That’s VERY played out now, so much that I hate most these new R&B/Pop songs. But its commonplace now.
Anyway, good examples of Screwed and Chopped would be anything from DJ Screw, the grandmaster of Screwed and Chopped. Another good one is Michael “5000” Watts from TX (not Mike Watts from Philly).
The most horrible example of Screwed and Chopped music would have to be Tupac’s Loyal To The Game Album, produced by Eminem. I don’t even think Em knew what he was doing at the time when he was slowing down Pac’s tracks, manipulating his words, and chopping his verses in half.
