GMoneyParticipantJust thought I’d share a rant, something that’s been bugging the crap outta’ me for years. Finally got around to writing about it on my site.

"Music IS The Artwork – A rant by GMoney"
I like art. Period. I could sit and stare at a good painting, or any visual work for quite a long time. I enjoy figuring out the message, what the author was feeling when they created the piece. What atmosphere, emotion, mood or event it portrays.
[END TOUCHY FEELY]
But music… come on people… don’t be fooled. When is the last time you sat in an art gallery, looking at a photo or painting and there was music cranked? Would that be appropriate? Perhaps in some bizarre special circumstance that I’ve not yet been turned on to, that would be nice. Generally speaking, I have to believe that would be absolutely horrendous.
I present the basis of my rant, that the opposite is also true.
Artwork can ruin or inhibit my abilities to enjoy a pice of music. I don’t care how good you are with Photoshop, how wicked the lens flare you put across 50 cent’s face looks, or how delicately you chopped Lady Gaga’s head on to the body of Michael Jackson in an attempt to visually portray your "mashup". Really, I don’t. The music should stand alone.
I task you, producers, artists and all creators of music with a challenge. The next time you put something on Youtube, or Facebook, or wherever you might squander your tunes present a black screen with white text saying "Close Your Eyes" rather than some fancy-schmancy photoshop work. If you can’t close your eyes, open your ears and receive by some divine method an emotion or atmosphere through listening alone, you haven’t done a good job.
Now go ahead and attack me with some BS about marketing.
Seriously cheesed,
GMoney[/quote:uh614jqh]

ChunkyEatsMyDinnerParticipantIs it not possible to enjoy 2 mediums at a time?
I cant seem the harm, if u like to close ur eyes to listen to music, the screen could be filled with hula dancing
shemales promoting the ‘bit of both’ nature of mashups without bothering you.I loved the Fatboy vid to ‘Right here, right now’ (slightly of track wit what ur talking about i know) but
still very enjoyable for me.What about musicals? A score accompanying animation, film, actors on a stage?
I think the 2 go together pretty well and have no objection myself.I completely agree that piped music in an art gallery could be incredibly annoying but….
What if u could look at a painting and listen to the music the artist may have been
listening to when he created the piece?…….Or maybe its just BS marketing haha!

GMoneyParticipantSpeaking of musicals, have you seen Sweeney Todd? Insane. Loved it.
It is a rant afterall. My point was really simple, that music itself should stand up on its own as an enjoyable piece of art and is paramount to the imagery that might go with it.
Musicals, movies… they are their own form of art and of course incorporate various mediums.

ajtmexParticipantOf course the music can stand alone. The artwork is just an extension. Kinda like weaves. Or kinda like a good steak with a side. Sure the steak can stand alone on it’s own, but the side isn’t such a bad idea, and it doesn’t hurt.
