DJThuhtParticipantSo I had my first gig last Thursday, and I had a great time! It took me a little bit to figure out my music selection, since I was playing hip hop (since thats…what generally gets played around here), but they really ate up the pop/commercial house remixes of pop tunes.
Someone on another forum classified my crowd as hipsters… So anyway, I didn’t know if you guys could recommend any more music for me? They want me to dj again next month, and I don’t want to play the same set 😉In addition to the pop stuff, they also liked older stuff like.. baby got back/ice ice baby/macarena (one of the guys that I was doing this for walked up to me with a flash drive halfway through to give it to me >.<)
I was hoping maybe for a compilation or something with older tunes that everyone knows, ya know?
Thanks!

bonnaventureParticipantHipsters are a hard bunch to pin down. I’d say drop a mash up whenever you can. I know hipsters around here really did the pavement/jay-z and the beatles/jay-z.
If these are truly hipsters in the derogatory sense, then you should always be juggling between classic (good) classic (bad) and super obscure new stuff.

DJThuhtParticipantWell, I didn’t really label them hipsters, but someone on another forum did.
If it helps, they were all California Honors Scholars (so pampered kids that could have gone to any UC that they wanted to), all 18-21 years old, and 80% white. I started off playing tunes like Metro Station- Shake it, Britney Spears- Circus, Gimme More, Rihanna- SOS, Shut Up and Drive, Disturbia, Pussycat Dolls- When I Grow Up, Lady Gaga- Just Dance, etc.. and before I moved into hip hop, I’d had a few people tell me something to the extent of "You play the best music!"
But as I said, I moved into hip hop, but they really didn’t get into it at all. Half of them made a huge congo line midway through "Hip Hop Hooray." But they all did the Cha Cha Slide (>.<), and the Macarena, and liked the older songs that they all grew up with. So, whether they’re hipsters or not, i haven’t had enough experience to make that call. I just know they liked the pop music and the older music. And the two mashups that I dropped.
