JuggernautParticipantto be honest, if you’re just starting out get what you can…don’t blow loads of money…you dunno if you won’t get bored/find a new hobby. you’ll have a load of expensive kit with not much use. CDJ100’s for cd’s is fine…
there’s a bit of controversy over where to start: CD’s or Vinyl.end of the day it’s up to you, but from my personal experience (starting with cd’s) it’s a hell of a lot easier to start with vinyl then transfer to CD’s than the other way round. (Unless ofcourse you get a set of CDJ1000’s and leave them stuck on vinyl mode)

AdSense 336x280June 25, 2006 at 12:37 pm #592213
tim.gosdenParticipantIt does depend what music you play, what you spinning/planning to spin?
Tim.
AdSense 336x280June 25, 2006 at 12:42 pm #592214
will275Participantumm mostly hip hop,rnb and all dat..what u think bout dem numark cdx tables, get at me.
AdSense 336x280June 25, 2006 at 3:36 pm #592220
JuggernautParticipantif you’re looking on possibly getting into the turntablist side of things then you’d be better off starting with vinyl as hiphop, rnb, reggae, ragga, etc. are still somewhat more based on using vinyl where as dance/house etc. (for example) are easily obtainable on cd and mixing them is fairly straight foreward as opposed to hiphop mixing (this isn’t set in stone mind, as i and a lot of people i know utilise hip hop styles of playing in more house/dance oriented sets)

will275Participantso how would one go about practicing scratching?? i think i might just get some mk2 technics 1200’s its gonna be a long time to collect some records but my friend says its worth it ?? i guess so,well thanks 4 da help juggernaut good lookin out.
AdSense 336x280June 26, 2006 at 4:50 am #592243
will275Participanthey is’nt it expensive to keep up da maintenance on tt like da needles etc??get back
AdSense 336x280June 26, 2006 at 10:18 am #592255
JuggernautParticipantnot really…keep them clean and have a static free cloth for your vinyl to get rid of dust and you’re sorted. the needles aren’t really that fragile. only if you throw them all over the place and really neglect them.
If you’re only playing in your bedroom then you really don’t need to fork out on uber expensive shure or ortofon needles/cartridges, although the really cheap ones won’t do you no favours either.AdSense 336x280June 26, 2006 at 11:27 pm #592281
will275Participantoh ok ..gotta lot of thinkin to do..im plannin on gettin some soon..i should have at least 2,300$$ usd to spend so i dont know might just go 4 da turntables.
AdSense 336x280June 28, 2006 at 6:33 pm #592350
In SilicoParticipantdef. go for something better if you can – I don’t recommend 100s at all – 200s at minimum
AdSense 336x280June 28, 2006 at 10:29 pm #592370
will275Participanti might just go 4 da turntables..thanx though.

JuggernautParticipantit’s juggernaut…no spaces.
the previous link is a good one also:How to DJ (Properly)
is (in my ever so honest opinion) THE bible for beginner and regular dj’s alike on all aspects from starting out (on both cd or turntable) more advanced techniques (including turntablism/scratching) on to getting on out there.
Have a look on amazon, shouldn’t be too expensive and is definately worth it in the long run…it’ll deffo answer all your questions you’ve got popping up left, right and centre.AdSense 336x280July 13, 2006 at 3:47 pm #593187
DJ Loyal TParticipantI think that these days with the way technology has evolved DJ equipment, the only way to go is by getting better stuff to start off with. The 100’s are completely different than anything that is on the market right now. Now maybe you could start out with like a low model Denon or a CDJ 800. That is just my thought.
AdSense 336x280July 19, 2006 at 10:22 am #593712
nickcutupParticipantcdj 100 s are fine for starting off, make sure you really enjoy it before blowing all yer savings innit 😉

…and yes, it IS absolutely as good as you say it is.
Another good book if you’re into more ‘informational’ reading than technical reading, is ‘Last Night a DJ Saved My Life’ by the same guys (Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton). It covers the entirety of DJ history from the first time someone played a record all the way through current DJs and CD-mixing performers.
Cheers!

Nah…mine’s called How to DJ (Properly) i got it when it first came out (wide-ish book in white with some spinninv vinyl cut out into "D" and "J" respectively) but i guess the name may have changed a little, or it may be down to publishing issues cross atlantic. they are indeed exactly the same word for word tho.Forgot to mention Last Night a DJ Saved My Life….another totally awesome book to read…see it as the second installment of how to dj properly/right. it leaves you with that feel good/well educated feeling too
