DJ ValParticipantHiya. I was wondering if anybody could help me locate some good "house" piano and other keyboard sound samples. I am unfortunate enough not to no how to play a keyboard. I’m in desperate need for some sound samples for the use in house music.
I do have a casio keyboard, I’m going to try and connect it this week-end, but I don’t know how to play. So if anybody knows a good site where I can find the basics on how to learn to play a keyboard I will be eternally grateful.
Oh and if I disappear over the weekend, it’s because my computer has blown up while trying to connect the keyboard, so send help

The CutterParticipantHi Val,
There are many sites you can go to to get all kinds of music samples but most of the good ones you have to pay. For example I remember Sonic Foundry/Sony used to make sample loop cds for use w/ Acid Pro( they probably still do). I never really liked them. It’s not that there not good or useful but sound to cookie cutter for me.
I think the best and most creatively freeing aproach is to get a basic midi controller( a keyboard basically) and invest in a decent midi sequencing program and software synth programs. Also buy a couple of books on playing piano chords, scales and basic midi sequencing( just for pointers).
There are plunty of well informed people on this site that can lead you into the right direction for programs and midi controllers etc.
Check some of these sites.

DJ ValParticipantCutter & S.T. thank you so much for your replies. My goodness getting a keyboard is more technical than I thought. Maybe a bit too technical. I purposely bought a keyboard with a usb cable thinking it’d just be a matter of plugging it in and hey presto start playing.
My whole problem is i don’t have patience and because of this i always end up stuffing things up. Time and time again my mates tell me my major problem is that I expect to know things over night and i never listen to them or learn by my mistakes.
I thought just plugging it in and hopefully using it in soundforge 8, abode audition, magix music maker deluxe 11 or cubase sx3. Do i really have to go out and spend more money on other stuff?AdSense 336x280January 12, 2006 at 1:27 am #582978
DJ ValParticipantRitchie you don’t no how pleased i am to hear that. I thought i was the only one that didn’t get this kind of stuff and thought i was going to make myself so

kamikazeParticipantAs far as your keyboard problem: In whichever program you wish to use it in, you have to make sure that it’s selected as a Controller Device (input). There should be a section in the options/preferences menus. As it is a basic essential to music making, every program you’re using will have the type of selection menu. Make sure all drivers for the controller are installed. With most controllers, the actual name of the device should populate as a selection, as opposed to USB Control Device (1) or something.
Once you have it activated as a controller in the program you’re using, it will be able to send MIDI messages to the program. You must also have an instrument (I assume you want to play the keyboard like a keyboard for now, as opposed to using it to trigger other MIDI events) that accepts MIDI code. I can’t think of a single plug-in instrument that does not. Once the instrument is placed into a track in the progam you’re using, it should generate sound based on what you play on the keyboard.
There might be other problems such as latency that arise, but if you get this far then it’s the first step. You can always streamline the the setup later. If you give me more specifics about your set ups, I’d be glad to help further if you run into any problems.
Hope this helps!!!

DJ ValParticipantThanks for your reply kamikaze. I haven’t had time to set up my keyboard yet. I’ve just recently had an operation so it’ll probably a couple more weeks before i’m able to carry the keyboard downstairs. I will surely return to this post should i have any probs. Thanks again
Take careVal

Viktor KParticipantI found a free piano soundfont here:
http://www.pianosounds.com/freesoundfont.htm
Havent tested it yet though.
There is some decent sounding free piano soundfonts out there to use with samplers, I once find a 135MB one which I have used quite a bit actually.AdSense 336x280January 31, 2006 at 1:43 am #583924
anisinaParticipantThe Reason 3.0 Combinator has some excellent piano presets. I don’t know what you use Val, but if you have Reason 3, mess around for 10-15 mins, and you will most likely get the one you want.
There is a Reason NN-XT patch that is called ‘Bright Piano’ and with a tiny bit of work, it would fit into house.
