sandman205ParticipantHi guys. im taking the plunge into the dj world and going to buy me Something to get into it. Here’s the question: What the hell do i buy???!?!
basically i got no idea where to start. so maybe i will tell you guys a few things about why i want to dj and what i want to dj and maybe some of you will be so kind as to point me in the right direction!
Why??: after only being legit age for clubbing a year local dj’s have inspired me to take up djing as mainly a hobby but perhaps something more in the near future
what??: i intend on mixing house/electro house and doing some mashups
previous experience: been fiddling around with virtual dj for a few months making a few scratchy mashups here and there.
possible equipment choices: ive been looking at a pioneer cdj 100 pack with includes the 2 cd players and a Behringer VMX100. the package costs $AU990 (not to sure $US with the dollar value atm).so yeah any suggestions guys? i mean should i be starting on cd’s or maybe i should go digital? will the cdj 100’s suffice as entry level decks? how about the mixer? im not quite sure what the mixer does :S lol
well thanks in advance all who help this noobie in need!

DJ Bobby VParticipantThe cdj100s are ok for starting out but I think digital would be the way to go. If you’re hardcore into the whole "turntable feel" nothing beats time coded vinyl. Products like are the way to go. Otherwise programs like Virtual DJ will do. Using digital files instead of cds or vinyl is a whole lot more convenient and cheaper. If you use a program to mix with such as Virtual DJ you need to have a good surface controller like one of . If you’re stuck on cdjs, the 100s seem ok, but I’ll bet after a little bit you’ll wished you went with something better. I think using a program and a good surface controller to mix with you’ll get more for your money. I’m assuming you already have a computer.
Hope this helps.AdSense 336x280November 1, 2008 at 2:36 am #659167
sandman205Participanthey mate thanks for the reply

so how does digital mixing work? u buy a program and the mixer which has the 2 decks and that plugs into the program or something? i have a laptop which would be useful for this. but yes im quite keen on some sort of hardware not "laptop only" djing. Im an australian university student so my bank roll is extremely low what price am i looking at for a descent digital mixer? and sorry 1 more question why digital > cd for starting off?
thanks alot mate!!!

DJ Bobby VParticipantWhy download them..then burn them…then carry them around with you? You can store thousands of songs on your computer. Check out this control surface It comes with Virtual DJ software and all you do is connect it to your USB port.

DJ Bobby VParticipantAlthough I’ve never used that controller, I’m using an M-Audio product called the Mbox2 that works with my Pro Tools recording software and I love it. I checked out that link and it has alot of nice features. It works with MP3 and wav files too. Looks alright. More info

sandman205Participantthanks for checking it out. i think it would definately be the go for me (if not this then something digital). I now understand that there is absolutely no point carrying all your cds with you and having to load them constantly etc. these digital controllers basically do the same thing and yes they are cheaper! thanks a lot for the help dude appreciate it!

djgemini529Participanti would suggest getting denon u can pick up 2 used s3500 for like 600-800 and theres a vestex mixter dm someting that is really good. Look into it as someone said thoguh u could go with turntables but if u wanna get technics there still a bit pricey the newer models are like 500+ each
