junoParticipantI’m working 3 projects right now – one is full rock/metal band 5 ppl total, the other is me & a guitarist/vocalist, & the other is myself, an MC, & a bass/lead guitarist. I’m the "DJ" element in each – i produce, play keyboard, piano, sound FX, scratches, fills, drums, etc…….BUT i feel like i really need work on my scratching abilities to give that extra edge to the live shows. I feel like i’m lacking in that ability more than any other – i just want to be able to provide a full talent.
i have numark CDJ’s & a digital mixer – i have a gemini ?? turntable and an old Technic 1200 + too many sound fx processors & amps. The main need for advice is that i’m not very familiar with the best types of scratching equipment – like what type of mixer, cartridge, & arm i should be using. Scratching on the CDJ’s is pretty cool but it just doesnt sound as nice as vinyl.

JuggernautParticipanti’m no turntablist or nothing, but i work with a few djs who are (mainly hip hop djs) and they tend to favour either vestax or gemini mixers (with two channels and a very short slick x-fader) and usually have ortofon scratch cartridges. some seem to be alright with the S shaped arm but most have a straight arm. all with standard technic 1210’s
not sure if that was helpful or not :s. i’ll have a word with one of the guys tonight at work

SINergyParticipanthi, I’m a breaks DJ who scratches as well. With regards to what equipment to buy It all depends on budget. I’d recommend either vestax mixers or stantons. stanton mixers are cheaper and just as good quality (and they have digital cross faders with lifetime guarantees) but you dont have the prestige of having a vestax. As far as decks go its still Technics or maybe some vestax’s. Arms dont really matter. Cartridges – most people use P-sure 44-7’s (I think thats what they are called) but DMC have recently changed their rules so they are insisting in the ortofon needles. so get some of them.
Also as I have found recently you need sh@t loads of practice !!! I decided to learn to crab recently and havent been out in 2 weeks. Good luck !!

And the label is Thud Rumble. Enjoy!

SINergyParticipantwhat an awsome topic. to back up how much practice you have to do I’ve been scratching for 2 years and have recently decided I want to learn how to crab. 2 weeks later and I havent been out once in the evenings and I now carry around a replacement fader in my pocket so I can practice at work….
Love it
