DJ ValParticipantJust wondering if there really is a rule of thumb for mashups. I always seem to come up with mashups of house tracks. I’m not a listener of hip hop/r&b so never really know what hip hop/r&b vocals to use with a house track or vise versa.
Do you think a mashup can be of the same genres or do they really need to be different genres?AdSense 336x280May 26, 2007 at 10:23 pm #622876

acheadKeymasterusually if the acapella is in key and has the same number of beats and can fit in the instrumentals time length then its ideal

coojuiceParticipantI think a good mashup simply depends on what the artist does with it.
Anything is possible…

pablo blueParticipantIf it sounds good it should be mashed!
I think mashups produced from different genres are so popular (and so common) because it’s funny to hear someone like Jay-Z doing their stuff over Girls Aloud (no jokes please!).

JuggernautParticipantA mashup of the same genre can work wonders or be a total flop…same for cross gender…i mean genre mashups. You don’t only need to stick to one pella or one instrumental or whatever.
I tend to favour ones that have the producer’s own element weaved within them (be it beats or glitches or cramming as many different musical references as possible within 3 minutes)

djmaxentropyParticipantI agree with all the comments here. I myself have done some same-genre mashups, but for the most part I like to cross-mix different genres to really create something new and different.

davefjParticipantIt’s kinda "horses for courses" really.
There are great cross genre and same genre tracks. Equally there are some abominations around in both types.Imagination is the key. Sometimes a random idea works wonders.
Same genre mash ups tend to be the easier ones to work with as, usually, they are Instrumental + Acapella = mash up.
Personally I prefer Mash Ups that have had a bit thought put into them.
Inventive edits, additional production, vocal re-arrangements that sort of thing. But saying that somtimes the most simple ideas work the best.Personall opinion is the main thing, like all thing musical.
I don’t think there should be a "blue print" to how mash ups are made they either work or they don’t
