ashleymannersParticipantBeen using a Compaq HP Laptop for about a year and a half now and recently its started just turning off whenever i do anything that uses a lot of processing power (ie. using Cubase & Ableton). I’m assuming that its overheating, since whenever it happens the laptop is extremely hot underneath. Will replacing the fan help this or will I have to get one of those external ones you put under the laptop?

MidarezakiParticipantDoes the fan still sound like it’s running correctly or sounding like a jet engine about to take off?
if the latter definitely replace it before you fry your processor. Otherwise, careful use of an airduster aerosol to blast the dust out of the CPU heatsink (and the rest of the machine) may help things. It certainly made my ageing Vaio FX401 work better.

oppozitParticipantyou could also purchase one of those coolers that go underneath the notebook

acheadKeymasterif you’re confident about messing around with clock speed settings and/or voltages, you could download , and limit your CPU speed. obviously the CPU performance will decrease, but at least it’ll be cooler (it may not work for every chip though).

matster1000Participantwell my Sony Vaio has been over heating in the top left corner for the last 5 months but i countered this by lifting up the corner that was heating from the surface it was on and letting air circulate this usually brought the temp. back to a warmish range

MAy need a new fan or a clean but i haven’t got round to it (no money

Flashy_2K7ParticipantYeh, my Compaq laptop did that for a while. But matster1000’s solution is what I did. Give it some air!

_____Participantyou gotta let it breathe.. but is it easy to replace the fan?

robdenlouParticipantHi guys. it seems all the sensible suggestions have been covered. I would try the compressed air to remove the dust from the fan and heatsink first. Also raise the laptop up a few inches to allow air to better circulate underneath it. I use a snooker triangle for this, works very well! Books etc. are not a good choice as they have a flat surface, the same as the table you had it on to begin with.
In an emergency, I have good success cooling my laptop by using a cold (unopened!!) can of beer as a heatsink. Anything cold on top of your laptop palm-rest area will suck the heat from it.

djjspinParticipantI’v had this problem when the fan stopped working in my hp. i bought a cooling pad, and it worked like a champ until I was able to buy a new one. Still have it though….

ginterhParticipantGet the device cleaned by your local salesmen and keep your laptop above the ground to make room for air – NO PROBLEM
AdSense 336x280June 26, 2010 at 8:06 pm #680517
ajtmexParticipantDownload SpeedFan, it lets you see the temp of your sensor. That way you can monitor your temperature of your computer and see if any of your changes are working.

illmatic940ParticipantGet a laptop cooler
AdSense 336x280June 30, 2010 at 3:01 pm #680670
DesiPIMPnLuvinItParticipantI agree with every one here. If your laptop is overheating almost every day, then your best bet is just to replace the fan. If it happens only when you open certain programs, then buying a cooling fan should do the trick.

JojoflowParticipantCould just be dirt. Try to take it apart and clean it. Vaccuum the fans.
