EdParticipantIt started back in the late eighty’s /early nineties as an underground movement (pork pie raver hats, vic’s inhalours, poppers etc). In 93 with the introduction of the criminial justice bill (here in the UK) the house scene moved into clubs (as it was hard to organize raves) and house music became mainstream for the next few years.
It seems to have evolved now and the youngsters seem to be more into real band music than house music.
The scene has become slightly divided these days with lots of sub-genres of house (hardhouse, deep house, tech house, handbag, scouse house) where has before it was just ‘house’.
There seem to be more and more bedroom producers nowdays and loads of really good, fresh house music out there (if you’re prepared to look). I recon house music is better than ever right now not dead !
what do you lot recon ?

JuggernautParticipantNope..it’s still going strong imo, it’s just had to evolve with the times…especially with the internet now.
Raves are still going strong (you just need to know where to look
)
Just the media did an uber cock-up in saying that the scene had died etc..
It’s not dead…it’s just gotten wise

eric sharpParticipantNo, house music is Undead. It is a flesh-eating zombie terrorizing children all over the world, slipping its way into their nightmares and sucking out their brains. One day house music came into my apartment, and I was screaming at it like "you’re supposed to be dead!" House music just chuckled this evil laugh, reached its cold hands into my eyes, and took over. I have been unable to stop my head from unconsciously bobbing whenever I hear beats since. It is truly a tragic story.

junoParticipantThings arent always dead if you dont notice them as much – most fads are usually absorbed into pop culture.

VazParticipantHouse music is just evolvin like almost any other music genres and i think these sub-genres will only do good things wee need those sub genres so the music will stay alive.. house music will never die.

george_vegasParticipantI don’t think House Music is dead at all. In fact I think its still growing. I’m a Hip Hop head myself but I also get down to the sounds of more soulful grooves. In London U got a few big pirates stations such as House FM who have DJs like Danny Ramplin, Alex P and Brandon Block etc. Even Erick Morrilo and Todd Terry have played on it. And thats a Pirate Station.
The thing about House music, (not Cheesy crap in the Charts) I’m talking sick grooves. IT’S UNDERGROUND
My question is…has Drum and Bass had its day?

junoParticipanti def agree with u on that S.T. – everybody has their own "golden moment" in their music listening career. same with anything – thats why ppl get depressed is b/c they want to get back to a certain fun part of their life & cant.
anyway, i spin everything & i find it hard to keep up with one style of music but i’ll stand by my OG comment & say that House is being absorbed not dying. House to me is a basically a 4/4 beat with a groovy/deep bassline to go wit it. Anyone heard Gorillaz – Dare (2005)? House is dead?
Maybe true house isnt as driven as it use to be but most creative ppl look for different sources of expression other than the same old genre. Just as Trance isnt the same as it use to be when Oakenfold, Sasha & Digweed, ATB, Darude, Pete Tong, etc. ran it back in 1999-2001. it just changed/stopped as is was coming. Its was absorbed into popular EDM -even breaks producers will use a house beat from time to time b/c it fits into the funky, bumpy, hard driven, roughness on the dancefloor. Hip hop producers like Lil Jon use trance synths – maybe a coincidence but music flows everywhere & gets into everythings.

EdParticipantyeh guess it is evolving. It seems to have gone properly underground here in the UK. Have a few friends who are pretty big dj’s based here in London and most of their gigs are now based in Russia, slovenia and other eastern european countries – not here in UK !

junoParticipantgeorge_vegas wrote:My question is…has Drum and Bass had its day?I think the direction that it was going in killed it. Most of it just got too evil, crazy "jump up" & repetitve 4 me. its a pretty moldable type of music b/c of its tempo. i usually do a good bit of blending when i make a DnB set b/c its hard 4 me to fill a whole CD with new tracks that i like completely.

The "pop scene" changes, House music will always remain.

JuggernautParticipant[quote quote="george_vegas":3ge0q2rv]
My question is…has Drum and Bass had its day?[/quote:3ge0q2rv]MY GOD no!!!…far from it..
Having DJ’d at my uni nightclub for about 2 years now, there’s been an evident surge in DnB awareness (commercially speaking, and probably for longer than 2 years too). I prefer playing DnB in comparison to House as people will dance their butts off and not care if their mascara is running
. *Prime example, we recently had the smirnoff experience uni tour round and we sold out to the extent of one in – one out, by 11pm and it got worse when Pendulum was on.
Shy Fx – everyday is in the radio1 charts at the mo (pleasant change from shake Ur body
)Also with places like Fabric, The End, Bar Rumba, Turnmills etc. regularly playing out drum n bass, it’s far from dead.
There has been this distinct line between the more ‘hardcore’ gritty drum and bass (say like Sub Focus, Pendulum, Aphrodite etc.) and the liquid drum and bass (Hospital records, V recordings, London Electricity etc. which i’ve noticed and like house music, it’s just evolving. when it’s out of the media eye, it just goes underground and keeps on keeping on…
You know??? (sorry for the long post…just a topic me and a few mates have been ranting on about for a few days
)*(i’m not saying house music attracts posers, it’s just that i’ve noticed that when there’s commercial house music being played, ladies tend to be very conscious of how/where they dance)
