JuggernautParticipant**EDIT…thanks everybody!!! The deadline for my project is Monday (30th) so can’t take any more in, need to finish everything off this weekend!
Everyone who took some time out to help, it’s been much appreciated!!!
Thanks!**Hopefully i’m not doing wrong by this (i’m really sorry if i am) but:
I’m doing an abstract animation project based on DJing (more so crowd reading/emotions/atmosphere…in that direction) as it’s something i do and quite interested in. However having one point of view is never sufficient so if it’s not asking too much, i’ve got 5 questions which i’ve developed specifically for this.
It would be much appreciated if anyone could help out
(What venues do you mainly play? Clubs or smaller private venues)
1. do you have a playlist or do you play out by ear?
2.how do you feel when you play out? or do you go through quite a few emotions through the night (for example, somewhat pissed off when a mix doesn’t go as well as planned…maybe due to someone waving their hands in your face right at that crucial point?)
3.if you could put a colour to a set, what would it be?(no logical reason is necessary)
4.Do you structure your sets as a journey of some sort?
5.When you read the crowd would you put on a song that you know they’d go mad for but you don’t particularly care for that track, or do you and the crowd just kinda ‘click’?
On here or via PM is fine…
Thanks

djdyvurseParticipantTo answer your questions.
1) I don’t have a playlist. Everytime I’ve played with a playlist i’ve failed miserably.2) I’m in the middle of revamping my style right now. So my feelings go to pissed off more than usual now because i’m trying to mix different genres of music than i’m used to. There is nothing however like the feeling of people going ape shit over your song. It’s better than sex.
3) blue for the warm up yellow for the prime red when it’s time to get crunk and green when its time to slow it down.
4) I structure my sets to build up energy slowly. then I drop the energy and do it all over again.
5) I play "My Humps." Does that answer your question?

JuggernautParticipantbloody hell fire..this thread was on its way to page two a few days ago! thanks courtjester and nifyadontkno.
To answer your Q Vice it’s a uni assignment and i’m using Flash MX and Final Cut Pro HD. I would look at other programs but i’m on a mac and only have two weeks so it’s better that i use software that i’m fairly confident in
The final output will definately be an AVI on CD but that’s not the main area of concern…the sketch book is and it’s doing my head in!! (shouldn’t have decided to buy a sketchbook with black pages…
…silver ink EVERYWHERE!)AdSense 336x280January 19, 2006 at 2:53 pm #583386
vice versesParticipantlol juggernaut!
i loved all that uni project stuff,… i concentrated on the stop motion side of animation, like the wallace grommit stuff, but unfortunately there just arent enough jobs out there in that field, so it was pretty much a waste of time!
ure on a better chance with flash. two weeks aint a long time to get it done tho!!
good luck with it all, anddont buy black sketch books!

acheadKeymasterHIYA MATE!!!
I PLAY AT MOSTLY PRIVATE OR SMALL CLUBS (HAVE PLAYED IN CLUBS, FOR ME ITS ALL ABOUT THE POSITIONING OF THE DJ BOX I LIKE TO SEE THE CROWD WELL)
1. I HAVE AN IDEA OF WHAT WILL BE PLAYED, STILL DOING IT BY EAR I GENERALLY KNOW WHAT THE CROWD WANNA HEAR.
2. ITS THE BEST FEELING EVER CLOSE TO SEX (SOME MIGHT DIFFER) MAKES ME SMILE EAR TO EAR GETTING A WAVE OF SOMEONE I DON’T KNOW, OR ESPECIALLLY WHEN SOMEONE SCREAMS AS I DROP A TUNE IN. WHEN U FUK UP A MIX I JUST LOOK FOR THE PERSON WHO SPOTTED IT AND WE BOTH SMILE ABOUT IT
3. I CANT PUT IT TO ONE COLOUR MINE WOULD BE SOMETHING LIKE THE OLD CHEEP DISCO LIGHTS YOU KNOW THE ONES WITH 4 PAINTED BULBS THAT FLASH IN ONE SEQUENCE, IT JUST TAKES ME BACK….HMMMMMM.
4. I DONT TAKE THE SET ON A JOURNEY I HAVE TRIED TO BUT THE CROWDS IN DIFFERENT PLACES MOVE AT DIFFERENT PACES.(LOL I’M A POET)
5. I GIVE THE CROWD WHAT THEY WANT ….I TEASE IT OUT OF THEM THEY HAVE TO WORK FOR THE TUNES(ANY SEROUS CLUBBER SHOULD KNOW WHAT I’M ON ABOUT.

Dan_BrazierParticipantHi there, heres my 5 cents
1) any DJ who sticks to a playlist is comitting suicide, no two crowds are ever the same and no two nights are ever the same
2)i generally feel good, knowing i have some new tunes i want to play. what pissed u off is when that one miserable git comes up an tells you your mixing/music taste/this record is shit and fucks you off for a bit. the you forget about him and carry on with the other people who are there enjoying what youre giving them.
3) colour? mmm darkness with flashes of strobe lighting
4) start off slow, build it up, get the girls dancing, go with some classic tunes, go higher, then slow down, then up and either finish on a big high or slow down again (depending on venue and crowd)
5) if theres a song i know theyl go mad for i plan ahead..what will i play at least three tunes before and after

I play house parties mostly – about 1 or 2 a week – usually 30-80 ppl. i concentrate most of my free time to producing & learning piano & guitar.#1-if i play for a random audience i play out by ear or whatever i’m getting requests for. if someone asks for some "techno" i have pre-recorded mini-sets, remixes, & mashups ready to go so ppl can hear my stuff.
#2-i just zone out…ppl will talk to you constantly. I get in a kinda neutral percussive feel when i spin – i dont really pay too much attention to whats going on except ppls reaction to the music.
#3-neon bluish-green with yellow speks
#4-if i’m playing by request then no – of course i do try to keep the same mood – but otherwise its a definite yes.
#5-i show them what i like about music while giving them what i know they want to hear – its boring 4 me otherwise. a party in east Atlanta can be punk, hip hop, trance & breaks, nu-age rock…..thats why i dont usually put together preorganized sets for parties b/c i usually dont stick to them. some nights i click with the audience, some nights i dont depending on if i’m reading them right. i’ve been doing it 4 a few years tho so i’m starting to get the hang of it.

djgyverParticipant1. I usually have all my stuff orginized by BPM order just incase i have to quick mix out of something (you got to be orginized)
2. When i first started i always gave my self about half of the song length to cue up for the mix, thats when i was always nervous, now all i need is 15 seconds to cue and feel ver confident..even if some one is distracting me
3.my sets would be orange when i speen hip hop and neon green when i spin trance
4.i like to start smooth.. not for to long tho…then pump up the bass and start geeting hyphee for the rest of the night i dont like to see people taking breaks..i wannt people on the D-floor for as long as i can.
5.I do what i have to to keep them on the D-Floor (dance floor)
