The Last WordParticipant.. in Cubase SX3. Has this ever happened to anybody?
This just started happening to me. It only happens when I try to import or overwrite files around 15 – 20MB. Anybody?

In SilicoParticipantHey there,
The first thing I recommend in these situations is to close EVERYTHING in the background. Sometimes this even requires you to actually go into Task Manager and end processes that are not necessary for windows. For a list of these processes, check this out:
[url:3nok4olt]http://www.custcenter.com/cgi-bin/sonypictures.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=1101&p_created=1091546765[/url:3nok4olt]
Next, if this doesn’t work, I would uninstall, remove the Program Files folder for that program, perform the ‘End BG Processes’ steps in the KB article above, and re-install from their latest software update(assuming they have any).
Let me know if you still have trouble.

JeremyParticipantI’ve no experience of SX(still happily on VST5!),however…
~are files you are trying to overwrite write-protected?
~do you have plenty of disk space for any temp files created?
~do you use a separate partition or disk for all audio?
~are drives defragmented?
~are you able to ‘save as’,ie.with a different name?hope some of these might help

In SilicoParticipantCubase has error handlers that would give you a nice easy-to-understand error for all of the above reasons (except maybe an extensively fragmented disk – but that’s usually just access time issues).
If it’s an exception error there is either a missing or corrupt file in the program’s working directory, or a problem with a file it uses somewhere else.

Rob,
Thanks for the info, I’m going to try this as soon as I get some time. I’ll let you know how it goes.
I remember having problems with trying to remove or disable unnecessary programs from my PC when I first put this thing together, you think I’ll run into difficulty with what you’re suggesting?

In SilicoParticipantIf you have XP and you’re having trouble closing down unwanted background software, do the following:
Go to Start>Run and type in MSCONFIG (click OK)
In the Configuration window, go to the Startup tab all the way on the right.
Un-check the box next to anything you don’t want to load at startup. Note that this is just for PROGRAMS launching at startup.
Next, go one tab to the left (Services) and check the box that says ‘Hide all Microsoft Services’.
Un-check any SERVICES you don’t want to launch at startup. Note that these are bg SERVICES.
Click Apply, and then Close (you will be asked to restart – do it). When you restart, you should be free of any bg programs/services you un-checked. Also, don’t hesitate to click ‘Disable All’ on the Startup tab, because your computer does not require any of these programs to run properly. Those are all hard-coded into Windows.Any problems, reply or PM me. Cheers!

Ok, this is where I struggle in the computer department: I’m scared I’m going to royally fuck something up! I’m not as technically savvy as I should be…
When I first got my computer up and running, I was advised to turn certain things off because I wouldn’t need them for what I was doing. Boy did I ever screw that up… When I go to task manager now and check the processes tab, there are a bunch of processes that I can’t help but assume are associated with SOMETHING that I would need.
I probably just need to defrag my drives…

Anything that will truly f**k up your computer can’t be ended in the processes tab (ie. system, or system idle process).
You can cause yourself a pain in the neck if you haven’t saved your work in something, but it won’t mess up the computer.
All of these processes are returned to the system after a reboot, so if all else fails, reboot.

In SilicoParticipant[quote quote="subGENRE":3sc483wk]If you want to disable services, I would recomend using the services.msc utillity. it has alot more info about the services and allows you to see which ones are running, plus the option to set them to manual, instead of just turning them on and off. The msconfig utillity is great because it allows you to "hide all microsoft services" but should be only used as a reference.
To use the services utillity, click the start menu, click run then type services.msc and press enter. Let me warn you though, If youre not somewhat familliar with services and what your computer needs to run correctly, I would not mess with them.
Heres a list of needed and un-needed services that I use here on my system. You can also turn off certain things, and then turn em back on as you need them, like the automatic updates, print spooler, ect. I also dont use the windows firewall, windows defender, (I have my own 3rd party software) or themes.
These should be set to automatic
Application Layer Gateway
Automatic Updates
Cryptographic Services
DCOM Server Process Launcher
DHCP Client
DNS Client
Event Log
IPSEC Services
Plug and Play
Print Spooler
Protected Storage
Remote Access Connection Manager
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Security Accounts Manager
Shell Hardware Detection
System Event Notification
System Restore Service
Task Scheduler
Themes
Windows Audio
Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing
Windows Management Instrumentationthese are safe to disabled
ASP.NET State Service
Clipbook
Error Reporting Service
Fast User Switching Compatibility
IMAPI CD‐Burning COM Service
Indexing Service
Infrared Monitor
Machine Debug Manager
NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing
Network DDE
Network DDE DSM
Network Location Awareness (NLA)
Performance Logs and Alerts
Portable Media Serial Number Service
QoS RSVP
Remote Desktop Help Session Manager
Remote Registry
Routing and Remote Access
Secondary Logon
Security Center
Smart Card
SSDP Discovery Service
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper
Telnet
Terminal Services
Uninterruptible Power Supply
Volume Shadow Copy
WebClient
Windows User Mode Driver Framework
Wireless Zero Configuration
WMI Performance Adapterany service that you are unsure about can be set to manual, and will only be started when the application that requires it is running. This is a way to check which ones you need too. You can set all the unsure ones to manual, the use your system for what ever task that you needed the extra "horsepower" for. Then go back and check which services are running to see what services are required for the task.
…hope this was helpful to somebody….mike[/quote:3sc483wk]
So I have some issues with this post, Mike.
If you stop the following services, you will essentially render the computer useless:
ASP.NET State Service – Software support system
Clipbook – Do you like to copy things? Don’t stop this.
Error Reporting Service – Do you know what a BSOD error is? Stop this to find out.
Fast User Switching Compatibility – Do you like to use a system with more than one user? Stop this if you don’t.
IMAPI CD‐Burning COM Service – Do you like to burn CDs? Stop this if you don’t.
Machine Debug Manager – Do you like your computer to tell you when it crashes, or just restart? Stop this if it’s the latter.
Network DDE – Do you like the internet? Stop this if you don’t.
Network DDE DSM – See above.
Security Center – Do you like viruses and spyware? Stop this if you do.
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper – Do you like networking your computer? Stop this if you don’t.
Terminal Services – Do you like your computer to run even the most basic of operations like calc.exe? Stop this if you don’t.
Windows User Mode Driver Framework – Do you like your computer to lock out your admin user? Stop this if you do.Mike, please be sure you know what you are telling people before telling them to end half of the services in their system. The rest of these services are – indeed – safe to stop, though stopping a lot of these services will cause countless errors at startup when the program that they belong to tries to use them.

subGENREParticipantI complied this list off of blackviper.com not windows help and support, error free so far for the past 3 years.

AdSense 336x280July 25, 2006 at 2:34 pm #594478
In SilicoParticipantYeah, just remember that most people don’t know the difference between their BIOS and their WIN.INI….
Customers who don’t know their systems very well and tinker anyways are definately a BAIN of tech support.
