jcarnicelliParticipantI recently bought Reason 4 to learn to compose my own tunes. I’m mostly out to just have some fun making music. But it would be cool if I make anything decent to know my creations get played in clubs and mixed into DJs’ sets. Nice to be able to say, "hey, that’s my shit they’re playing!"
Admittedly, I’m kinda oblivious about the rules and processes DJs use to find, vet, and pay for (?) source music for their mixes. It’s one thing for me to make a little web site with some downloads on it. It’s another to be noticed by the DJs.
Anyone care to educate a noob? Thanks.

otgParticipantGive your tunes to a friend who’s a DJ. If you don’t have any friends who are DJs, make friends with a DJ, then give your DJ friend a copy. If you can’t make friends with a DJ, become a DJ and play your own tunes.
More seriously, if you don’t have mates who DJ, you’re not going to have a lot of luck getting your stuff played without the kind of serious promotion a label can do on your behalf, so it’s back to the age-old question of how to get labels interested in your music…

jcarnicelliParticipantI remember reading somewhere about list clubs (not quite the right term) that DJs sometimes join to get circulations of new promo releases. I wonder if there are any DIY services like that where independent artists push their new releases for DJs to pull from.

weeddiggerParticipanttry soundcloud.com, yourcrate.com, and yeah, post your stuff on Myspace and feed it to as many dj’s you can (but try to be civil about it, dont’ sound desperate).

JuggernautParticipantechoing a bit of what’s been said:
websites
forums (!) seriously, especially if you’re on a mix forum…regularly post mixes up and you’ll get a group of people who go out of their way every month to make a comment on your mixes…after a while you may get someone interested in your tunes.Playing out. When you do, don’t just drop your whole tune and that’s that…play a little, and put snippets in here and there, the memory friendly parts are best, then towards the end of your set drop the whole thing. Works well to plant it into folks heads.
And yeah, DJ friends…or if you frequent a place enough that you know the DJ, have a word and give him/her a cd of your track. Next time you see them, drop it in the convo but don’t go nuts it’s likely they probably haven’t gotten round to it and want to or don’t have time at the moment.
If you’ve got money. Press out some dubplates.
And if you’re super cheeky….when a big DJ is playing and you’re playing before/after them, put it innocently in their record bag. (make sure your contact details are on it and readable. don’t leave it as a one-sided whitelabel with no cat No. or nothing…)

MikaileParticipantBest way, go to myspace. Create a musician profile. Add DJ’s who play your kind of music. In regards to style. See if they like it.

I do have one Cammy song in my collection… but I also started focusing on Trance/Dance/Hip Hop sets shortly thereafter…

DecibelAlexParticipantYoutube! Is a very gd way to get famous. But the worst thing dat could happen is dat sumbody downloads ur songs wif sum ytube dlr or sumtin n then claims it as his/her own.
Kinda same thing happnd to me.. A f***r named Ant and his gf contacted my record company and told them that all my work is 100% theirs. It sure pisses me off..
But it shouldnt be no probz, im gonna make a proof vid and then those w***ers will be sued for copyright infrigment! Hahahahaaa!!But hey, now i know sumtin new! Never tell anywhere dat ur signed to a label

diskobiscut2Participantwhitelabel.net – it’s a subscription service for dj’s and radio personalities. Basically, it’s a place to upload/download the latest releases and remixes of stuff that is about to hit the ‘shelves’ and be a hit. Or a potential one. Kinda like Promo Only, but more options.
They have the option to crate your own profile and upload your songs. Only thing there is, they can only be played at full quality when connected to serato, traktor, etc. Good luck!

ajtmexParticipantBut then the question of "How will I know if my song is played, or what kind of reaction I’ll get?" comes up. Here’s a thought. I’m in between equipment right now because a mate of mine blew it all to hell, but when I get my new stuff, gimme your tracks, and I’ll spin them at a party or something. Hell I’ll even take the extra step to get it on video, and send it to you. Just to get a good idea of how many people were dancing to it at the time. It’ll let you know where you stand as far as your entertaining skills.
