Reggie_p75ParticipantJohn Carpenter (& his collaborators) has done some good stuff and John Williams has done some quality work too.
But in movies today I think the whole concept of making a good enjoyable movie (with lots of good elements like a story for one) has died a death in favour of Hollywood making money rather than good product. We’ve had to endure re-hashed remake shite for the last 5-6 years with movies not a patch on the original.
Transformers anyone?? (it was crap except for the chick hehe), Starsky & Hutch (best thing about that was the credits), The Fog, Friday the 13th… when will it end..
And the soundtracks are junk too.. Too easy to just re-record the original with relevance to kids these days.. slow it down n slap an RnB beat on it…
Shazam!!!!!

aaronv2Participantwhile i do agree with you for the most part i disagree that everything out of hollywood is bad. A scanner darkly was an awesome attempt at an artsy blockbuster. If you go to see a hollywood blockbuster expect three things… A famous lead, a love scene, & CGI + Explosions!
Wanted for instance a crappy attempt at a remake of a comic book… it sucked. Sin City on the other hand? 300? both awesomely done blockbusters in my opinion.
Even the first matrix movie when it came out blew my mind. If you want a good story its best to hit up films from other countries. Particularly asia. Their horror movies are second to none.

elmatticParticipantLalo Schifrin: Bullitt, Enter the Dragon…he’s the master.
Alain Gorgauer: Fantastic Planet OST…incredible.
Clint Mansell/Kronos Quartet: Requiem for a Dream OST…you know it.

Tyler And DurdenParticipantBlade Runner has a good soundtrack and very good for sampling too as bits of the dialogue in.
American Beauty is pretty cool too.AdSense 336x280February 17, 2009 at 12:56 am #664237

I have to say, I absolutely love Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and Revenge Of The Sith soundtracks. LOVETHEMMUCH.
Then there’s Dragonheart by Rnady Edelman. Ohhho, man. "World Of The Heart" is one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard. Oh! And then "The Knights March" from the King Arthur soundtrack by Hans Zimmer. Never seen the movie, love the soundtrack though. I got the recording sessions version online somewhere, so each of the individual songs can be listened to, instead of just these big huge 10 minute tracks.

dude76Participantmy choice is very "classic" : Ennio Morricone, Nino Rota, Henry Mancini, John Williams, John Barry,…
And Quentin Tarantino Soundtracks ! It’s a banal choice…AdSense 336x280March 7, 2009 at 8:26 am #665131

I love the soundtrack of "The Hours"; as much as all of Phillip Glass’ music sounds the same, it suits the movie perfectly. There are parts of "Inside Man" where the score is incredible. "Lord of the Rings" had a great score too.
I also agree; Danny Elfman is quite a genius. His score for "Edward Scissorhands"… well, anything he’s done with Tim Burton is quite brilliant! And his work on Chicago was fantastic.
"Psycho" is probably one of the most brilliant scores ever.
In terms of parody, "Spaceballs" has a great score; the opening scene with the spaceship is classic!
And anything by Henry Mancini; the man was and is a genius. The theme from "Charade" is just incredible.

DJ LevantParticipantI’ve been a fan of Harry Gregson-Williams for a while. Was stoked to hear he was doing the recent Wolverine film and he didn’t disappoint. ‘Logan through time’ specifically was a great track.

HiBeats ProductionsParticipantHas nobody mentioned Star Wars. John William’s scores are so powerful and recognisable even today and represent the brand really well imo.

cxzParticipantHmm I’m not too sure don’t watch many films. If were talking T.V series as well Flight of the concords would be up there. Not too sure about films tho.

random1234567890ParticipantI saw Synecdoche, New York today. Wow.
Jon Brion did the score (most people will have heard of him I hope but if you haven’t, he’s worked with people like Kanye West, Dido, Fiona Apple, etc); most of it’s arrangements of traditions pieces, all of which are fantastic. Additionally, there are two songs in it, but the best is "Little Person", which Charlie Kaufman and Jon Brion wrote together: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IA_ubhYgjAc
It’s just… a beautiful song.
Aside from that, it’s a fantastic film with a fantastic score. If nothing else, I recommend the soundtrack
