EuphonistryParticipantWow. Since nobody but me downloaded my song, I must have really missed the boat on the description. Guess with a boring title like "September", I can understand.
This song is based on a fairly popular a capella available via the Creative Commons site ccMixter.org. There are so many relaxed versions of it there, but I wanted to give it a definitively strong dance beat and a fresh sound.
I really enjoyed digging into Reason’s library for inspiration to give some real complexity to the overall sound. It’s not the usual thump-thump drone. The tempo is set in part by a subdued electronic percussion track, but moreover by arpegiation and a rolling synth.
Normally, I’d have chopped up the vocals to make them very precisely fit the mechanized sound of a good dance song, but I chose not to in this case. Calendargirl doesn’t follow the tempo she sets perfectly because she wanted something more of a lounge sound, I think. But she does fits the measure perfectly, so no adjustment was actually needed; just a little reverb to put her on a smokey little club stage. Someone else did a more classic trance mix of September, but I think it comes off as a little more stiff in its perfection.
One small flourish I added is the swelling cymbal and crash. Because Reason will try to normalize a song to compensate for an overpowering track, the result feels like an energy bomb that brings in the refrain.
It’s not a long song and doesn’t feature a lot of twists and turns. I wanted to focus instead on a high quality taste of something you just need to get up and dance for. Hope you’ll give it a listen and some feedback. Cheers.

icecoolzParticipantFirst of all, great mix. Loved the tune. Kept in touch with the way the acapella is. Its got a very drunk feel to the whole song, if you get what I mean. Loved it. Never got repetitive. And the synth is awesome. Great work. Why dont u try introducing some beats into it ? I am sure it will work wonders for the song.
Second: I have often left songs here for weeks together without any responses. There are certain people who, when they post their remixes, get all the attention. Fear not. Cheer up. Your music will go noticed. I for one will look for your work in the future! Nice going. Now let me see what I can do with this acapella…hehehe. A dark elektro perhaps!

EuphonistryParticipantThanks much for the response and the kudos.
I have to admit that I’m kinda torn about whether to add another layer of percussion. A stronger beat would make it more obvious to the average dancer what the timing is. On the other hand, I’m afraid it could ruin the subtleties of the sound, like putting Cheez Whiz on a fine steak. I’d like to know what other people here think, though. More beat?
I’d love to hear a good electro mix of September. Drop a note on this topic to let me know when you post it. Cheers.

icecoolzParticipantNot sure if it needs a strong beat. Yes I use a lot of strong percussion in my music to as it gives me the whole body to the song. Maybe subtlety is what is needed. Try it, I would say.
I will def post an elektro mix of this just as I can finish messing around with the one I am doing right now. Watch out for the same!

mike001ParticipantSeems like your using a Casio too.
No. Just Joking.Mine was Absynth3.
Although you’ve made a bit of a scathing summary of mine, some of what you say is respected.
But like me you rely on Arps a lot.September is interesting & has a nice sort of Floaty Feel to it.
Could’nt Dance to it though as Beats too "Flanged" & undefined &
Arp that comes in & out is a bit overpowering!Overall, I like it.
Keep me notified of New songs.p.s start a myspace site as not many people like downloading files from unknown sources(virus etc.)

EuphonistryParticipantThanks for the feedback. And sorry for the negativity. Trying to be constructive. I like your Princess & The Bad Man track, incidentally.
Good thought on the myspace thing, but I really am sick of MySpace. I’ve made a few sites and they always suck, mainly because of all the junk that comes with MySpace and the poor Google integration. Guess maybe I’m just a cranky snob, but I usually fall back to custom sites.

Still, maybe I should do something to help people not be worried about MP3 hacks. Have you had this happen before with your PC?

mike001ParticipantYes. England is the centre of the universe for virus problems. Everyone & his brother goes through us.
Myspace is a pain in the arse but it’s ok for low quality listening & if anyone wants a basic unmasterd version thats the place to go.
i.e if any lable likes it enough you master it for them to get a better idea, otherwise why waste the time.Cheers.

GMoneyParticipantDon’t touch it! No more beats!
It sounds inspired, kind of abstract, a little bit free-styled and mostly has an electronic grass roots vibe to it.
I found it really stirred up emotion. Nothing specific necessarily, a very good track to put on in the background and reminiss or reflect. Kind of made me feel sentimental for some reason. Maybe it’s just the mood I’m in right now, who knows!
Either way, thumbs up all the way!

EuphonistryParticipantHmm. I hoped it didn’t sound retro. Still, I guess I can see what you mean, particularly with the treatment of the vocals.
In any case, I’m delighted you liked it. Thanks for the listen and the review. Cheers.
