DFTNDRKTParticipantFor starters if you haven’t heard of Girl Talk he’s a DJ who compiles 40 mashups into one track ex. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMyyg3G1bt4&fmt=18
Back on track, that was his CD Feed The Animals, but his live shows he does more insane work (Yael Naim – New Soul vs Khia – My Back). What i’m trying to achieve is emulate what he does at his live shows, i’ve been playing around and is actually very simple. Only thing i was wondering, what’s it called for the beat behind it all, the way he does it is Lyrics-Beat from a real song-Simple Beat.
Are those available up for public domain download? Do you think this project would be easy? Here’s part of the session, KILLS it

rabidwhodeyParticipantThought the live show was fail, like what he was doing though. Looks like he just had a long list of mix stuff he had together ahead of time, probably organized by tempo. I like the simplicity of his setup seemed to just have a laptop and that cross fader (or whatever) you see his left hand on. On his live show he should have run an 808 on the beat the whole time to add consistency that shiz seemed hard to dance too.
I too feel that everyone should strive for that caliber but its def not a bar that cant be exceeded.

Reggie_p75ParticipantOne smart guy indeed…
Not really the hardest things to do BUT this guy is ORGANISED and EXPERIENCED!!! Thats the difference between him n everyonce else. All his loops will be organised in tempo, breaks, instrumentals, solos and the like and he probs has most of the loops/sequences pre-loaded and has a general idea where the set is going. A basic acoustic 4/4 loop or drum machine consisting of about 8 loops that he can build up n break down the set with.
I had a friend who did his sets in a similar fashion, every sequence programmed and triggered when required, resulting in a fast set or a 15min super mix. An 808 kick was the back bone of every track… so air was moving in the place
Everything comes down to wot he has done in preparation even b4 he hits the venue n covers his laptop in cling film/shrink wrap to ensure so manic punter doesnt spill their overpriced alcoholic beverage on his equipment..
Talented yet reviled in some circles because of the simplicity of it!!!!

SameParticipantI’ve seen the guy play twice and the first time he was AMAZING. I never danced so hard. The second time was terrible but that wasn’t his fault (bad venue). I hear people talk shit about him all the time ("He’s just a glorified DJ!") but I disagree. The man is brilliant. I just tell people he is less of a musician and more of a composer.

djshadesukParticipantPersonally I think he’s quite over-rated. Theres nothing hard or mysterious about what he does… Triggering beatmatched samples that have been pre-organised to make sure they all "fit".
Its just the latest "cool" thing. People will have forgotten about him in a couple of months. A testament to that is Paris Hilton turning up at one of his gigs, a sure sign of "fad of the week" cool if ever there was one.
He’s neither a musician or composer… he’s a re-arranger.

SameParticipantYeah, but tell me you could have came up with that Biggie/Tiny Dancer mashup from Night Ripper. It was genius.
