YobParticipantI used to use FL extensively, for all my tracks. It does everything I need and is much easier to use than the likes of Cubase, Sonar, etc. A friend of mine used to pay me out for it, saying you can’t get a proffesional sound with it. "Crap!" I said… Until I started rewiring my tracks into Cubase which seemed to take my tracks to the next level. Since then I’ve been soley using Cubase and yeah my tracks are sounding better but maybe that’s just because practice has made me a better producer.
I have been trying to find evidence to support the theory that FL somehow sounds a bit tinny but have found nothing. I know that FL doesn’t support 24 bit, but I run Cubase in 16 bit most of the time anyway and it still seems to sound better. Unfortunately I find FL a much more inspiring piece of software to get the creative juices flowing.
Anyone know what’s up with this or having similar issues?

tim.gosdenParticipantOk, in a nut shell, thse programs are sequencers. If you use the right vst’s, samples and plugins then you can get a great sound in both. The mistake is that people use the included plugins in FL and these are not as good as those bundled with Cubase, hence te price difference of about 300 quid!

Use whatever suits you, even if you exprt all the tracks seperately from FL and mix them in Cubase!

Tim. [what you really want is Logic….
]AdSense 336x280June 3, 2006 at 1:54 am #590873
JuggernautParticipanthehe, Logic all the way..
another thing people tend to do is just use the presets there and not bother making their own "sounds" as it were…(a prime example is hearing a String sample from the Instru-mental pack for Reason 2.5+ in a Jamiroquai track off their latest album). I guess there’s nothing wrong with it, but once you’ve been working with stuff for so long and you’ve pushed yourself beyond being satisfied with just the presets, your ears will pick on them so quickly it’s quite scary

badboycParticipanti rather use FL cuz its easier and plus ive been using it 4 a long time so depends wa u more comfortable with
AdSense 336x280June 4, 2006 at 4:13 pm #590953
tim.gosdenParticipantYeah, I’m embarrased by it but I’m using FL 6 for everything! Thing is I’ve not found it a problem untill recently. I’m getting tracks signed though, just waiting till I get the money for a mac on logic, not much point in running much else with house music!

YobParticipantWant to hear the results of FL rewired to Cubase? Here’s a link to one of my tracks:
[url:14i1p8gc]http://www.acapellas4u.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=26555[/url:14i1p8gc]
It’s a grimey breaks/hip hop track, kind of hard to clasify but any feedback would be much appreciated!

NguyenHoangParticipanti used FL 6 for everything..etc, clubs , partys dance and i also use it with Acid

subGENREParticipantWhats next? plugins that emulate a certain hosts sound?
..mike aka subGENREAdSense 336x280June 5, 2006 at 3:35 am #591004
subGENREParticipantpersonnaly, I use ableton 5 (as my midi sequencer)rewired into acid 5 (as my tracker)
but I love the sequencer in FLoops for makin beats. no certain host is really better, some support higher sampling rates, and the m-audio stuff works with pro tools, but a pro can work in anthing/everything.AdSense 336x280June 5, 2006 at 6:23 pm #591049
tim.gosdenParticipantI guess it often comes down to the Eq and compression you use too! I find myself using T-racks EQ more and more instead of the FL mixer Eq becuase its warmer and mroe versatile!
AdSense 336x280June 7, 2006 at 1:31 pm #591124
DJDiaperParticipantMy humble oppinion on this matter is that most people who work with FL, just look at the step sequencer and be very happy that they can come up with a beat.
Cubase makes it easy to make little changes in drum patterns, that makes a mix more alive (I am talking house music ;))
In FL you must make a new pattern everytime you want a break or something. I see a lot of ppl just being too lazy to create a few different drumloops and snareloops, so the songs tend to become boring quite fast. Also a lot of ppl don’t look under the FL hood, when I talk to ppl just fooling around with FL most of them don’t even know where to find the mixer or how to apply an effect.
I use Cubase by the way… It works faster for me
AdSense 336x280June 7, 2006 at 3:02 pm #591130
tim.gosdenParticipantI guess the problem with Cubase for me is the cost! I just can’t justify 400 quid on SX3 and then another 600 quid+ just for a few plugins. I know theres a lot of free plugins but I REFUSE to used warzed software.
Why should I make money from something that someone is being paid to devlop, without buying it?!

tim.gosdenParticipant[If money was no object we would all have top of the range macs running Pro Tools and Logic anyway, with all the waves plugins and a stack of hardware synths!

]True…! I drool over the prospect every day…
I wouldnt use warez… and your rite, the steinberg VSTs are probably more than the program itself…pro tools too. So fl probably is the best budget sequencer… (to be really controversial, I dint really like ableton much either)… I dont know if there is a point to wot I`m writting, but I guess wot I`m trying to say is I can only go with wot feels/sounds rite to me… (even if it costs a bit) & I`m sure its the same with other peeps too… So each to their own…![/quote:3uz2w8u0]
Nail on head!AdSense 336x280June 7, 2006 at 10:53 pm #591165
TileyardParticipantFruity is alright definately it is SO simple to use and i will always love it for that. Knocking up a beat in fruity is SO much quicker than in reason!!
Im running Pro Tools now – its a bit of a headache – industry standard MIDI sequencing? i think i prefer fruity!
Yob! Fat sounding track! bit repetative though
AdSense 336x280June 8, 2006 at 4:25 am #591171
subGENREParticipantI think some hosts handle certain tasks better than others, wait let me rephrase that, I find that I can complete certain tasks/programming more efficiently in certain hosts. When I used to stick to only one host, (and believe me, I’ve used/still use them all, except protools.) I found that it took me longer to complete projects. So, instead of limiting myself to one certain host, I use all of the tools available to me to get the job done the most proficent way possible.
AdSense 336x280June 8, 2006 at 6:05 am #591175
tim.gosdenParticipantYeah, its true. If I’m honest I absoulutely hate so many things in FL6. I mean, this audio recording, it records everything in stereo, thats all that about [well its more dual mono, correct me if I’m wrong?]
With Cubase [running LE!] audio makes so much more sense but there not very many good plugins to using when mixing down. I tend to bounce all the tracks into fruity to apply EQ, Comp and reverb + other bits and bobs like guitar amp modelling and then bring it back into Cubase to mix down, I get great results when I do this so I guess I use the best parts of 2 programs.
Cubase is great for tracking and rendering final mixes, Fruity is great for applying FX due to the great mixer, but awful for tracking and mixdowns [you have to hit the record button on every channel in FL, each time, pain in the arse when your drum tracking trust me!!]
Tim.
AdSense 336x280June 8, 2006 at 12:07 pm #591197
TileyardParticipantnot sure what you mean about dual mono but unless your using high quality virtual instruments there is likely to be no difference between dual mono and stereo because the plugin is probably mono anyway (this is different to recording with 2 microphones where you get time of arrival differences etc.)

Yob! Fat sounding track! bit repetative though[/quote:2k2mw6bn]Thanks!
You know why it’s a bit repetative (I think)? Because I sequenced it in FL with it’s crappy pattern sequencer. As someone said in a previous post, you just write a few patterns & a few more for the breaks and repeat them. If Image Line found a way to ditch it’s pattern based sequencing FL would be a much more versatile program. Maybe if you could open a pattern from the playlist and edit it as a new one or something… And glue patterns together. And my drum trtacks made in it’s built in step sequencer sounds like slush! They should really just get rid of it entirely.Yeah I think I’ll just use Cubase
AdSense 336x280June 9, 2006 at 3:44 am #591222
subGENREParticipantthere was a time when I had a really crappy system, and was using Making Waves just for its lack of features.
Now I perform/record in Ableton Live with the audio rewired into Acid where I have the rendered audio tracks and the midi for battery.AdSense 336x280June 10, 2006 at 4:09 am #591271
big pun 2k6Participantimo i love ableton for djing and fruityloops for beats
AdSense 336x280June 10, 2006 at 4:31 am #591276
subGENREParticipantAbleton is my favorite for performing, the midi mapping in it is so sweet/easy. I use my radium 61 for playing, and my little oxygen 8 as an fx controller, with eq kills and the knobs for the freqs and a granulizing filter too, awesome for live performing/djing… mike
