avalonandonParticipantIm trying to get a feel for how many of our members actually write and record their OWN music…(not including mashups etc.) AND an idea of what instruments you play. I am putting the finishing touches on a tutorial and would like to know if a couple of topics are relevant enough to cover in the context of this group. Also, I am just curious for my own sake, becoming more familiar with everyone instead of asking several of you individually. Thanks for replying.
Ill start off for an example: I do write and record, playing electric/acoustic guitar, bass, piano/synth, harmonica, trumpet and vocals
PS. maybe these two questions could be included in the profile section…possibly including if you DJ, produce, write, etc etc?? Although it is frequently obvious by their discussions, these are things I often wonder about our members and rarely ask if it isnt clear.

AdSense 336x280June 20, 2007 at 4:00 pm #626168
JuggernautParticipantPlay 6 instruments, had to write scores for quartets and quintets when i was into that kinda thing.
That was by hand by the way…then was using Sibelius, then the score edit in Logic.
Also DJ and sometimes make remixes if the computer behaves.
AdSense 336x280June 20, 2007 at 4:13 pm #626171
avalonandonParticipantThis is definietely helping. Keep it comin and I like that were getting to know more detail about eachother. Ive spoken to so many people here and always wondered these things.
AdSense 336x280June 20, 2007 at 10:01 pm #626223
kidmerkuryParticipantJuggernaut, have you tried Finale? its much easier
AdSense 336x280June 21, 2007 at 12:28 pm #626294
JuggernautParticipantIndeed i have and it is indeed much easier but when you spent your first few years on this planet writing scores by hand it doesn’t really make that much of a difference.
Besides i already get free upgrades on Sibeluis and it seems to talk easily enough with Logic

mileshutchParticipantdj only.. love to learn to read and write music though 🙂
AdSense 336x280June 21, 2007 at 6:07 pm #626318
tspiritParticipantI do beats, remixes and I can play guitar and keyboard
AdSense 336x280June 22, 2007 at 1:21 am #626350
jabbampParticipantI usually make my tracks from scratch beat and all – samples and synths though, all software.
Sometimes use loops, but rather build everything up. Its a hobby for me, and I dont think I’ll be maknig anything truly serious.
Dont really play any instruments good, but can strum a little and can pick up a tune on an irish whistle. Can’t read music, but can play things by ear. I’d love to learn the sax, and believe I will have a go one day.

truth be told, i’m LAAAAAAZY, that and all the stuff i worked on during my music tech course and before hand are either still on college computers (which by now have probably been destroyed) or a HD from my old laptop which i ripped out because the S.M.A.R.T system said it was going to die soon.have a look see on i think i still left a track up there, funkydrumdiddy, which i was going to get an orchestestra of sorts to play it out cos you can only push reason so far.

ZeroleeParticipanthi all,
im a producer from germany and i usually record my own songs with cubase. I work alot on midi base which means i play the melody, drums and even anything you hear in my songs. I’ve sampled once or twice maybe just to give it a try but as i said i like to play it how i want. That way i have full controll of the base. Thats how i work normally.
AdSense 336x280June 24, 2007 at 2:37 pm #626767
DreamscapeParticipantI write my OWN music!
Mostly Hardcore and Gabber, but some Trance\Techno.
I like to use the rap acapellas and one liner vocals in my tracksPersonally i think mashups are pretty lame but some can be good if well produced and done with some original content

Hey! sounds like a lot of work went into that…cool drum/beat section. Also , I like the note choices on the end of some of those piano riffs, somewhat chromatic I guess is how you’d put it(?) …toward the end it really started opening up and I could definitely hear an orchestra! I can see what you mean and hear what you were striving for. Very rich. It reminds me of the awesome "deep breakfast" album by Ray Lynch – waaaay back…I know you have much going on but you should keep doing your own stuff.

lebeauParticipantYes, I actually do have a couple of compositions.
I write a lot of song lyrics too. Most of the stuff I just keep to myself, because to be honest, I’m never ever really happy with it, but I have started putting some stuff into production. So, we’ll see where this goes.
AdSense 336x280June 25, 2007 at 8:35 am #626883
ZikParticipantYea I produce my own things.. I can play trumpet and eh well, the keyboard of my computer hehe
AdSense 336x280June 26, 2007 at 9:19 am #627020
revenge_of_the_poodleParticipantI write and produce my own stuff, with help of keyboards, voices, some guitar and, of course, a computer. For a tutorial, if I might say, I would love to read some tips about actual production skills, i.e. how to improve sounds, fatten up basses, bounce the beats etc. I dj rarely, but sometimes do remixes.
AdSense 336x280June 26, 2007 at 12:21 pm #627056
avalonandonParticipant[quote quote="Astrolux182":a5vxarwa]I play and write using mainly
Guitar/Bass/Keyboard. I’m basic on drums but it’s not the most interesting instrument to me because you can’t make a tune on them.[/quote:a5vxarwa]Yeah, but drums will make or break a song…wish I had learned them as a kid!!
AdSense 336x280June 27, 2007 at 5:04 am #627174
henziParticipantI have an MPC, but I find it a bit limiting- the samples don’t always sound right to my ear- to do with the MPC’s "voicing" and the fact it’s 16-bit. So gonna start doing music on my computer, but my budget’s limited, any suggestions? Was thinking about getting a USB keyboard and some either free or bundled software. Still want to make sample-based stuff, and to be able to be creative without too much fiddling around.

avalonandonParticipantFruity loops is a sure fire winner.

I’ve got another track i did, influenced by Rob Dougan’s Flying Angels (i think…it featured in Matrix Reloaded soundtrack anyway). Again another ‘orchestra’ of sorts, when i can find it on one of my external HD’s i’ll upload it onto that myspace page as well.
You got any stuff up to which i may have a gander at?

Lol…guess I tagged that Ray Lynch thing. Havent heard it in more than ten years either. As for my stuff, Im just getting started on the recording aspect, but have ALOT of music to record. myspace.com/avalonandon I have only two songs up on the page so far. Both are short instrumentals used in a recent radio/podcast. Ill be adding more over the summer and fall.
