SidReighnParticipantI have to say it’s all a big con 3 deck mixing!
It is actually easier to progress your set in this way when you are an experienced DJ. Not convinced?
Let me explain…
When mixing solely with two decks, be they analogue or digital….you are working to a set dead line, ie, when the current tune playing rubs out.
With 3 decks, any idle time (ie, you have finished cuing the tune your about to bring in next) can be used to start cuing the 3rd deck. You could scratch, play accapellas, loops, you name it, or you could prepare another layer to the mix, and cut it in for say only 64 beats, in place of a mix down on an existing tune, then return to that.
So many creative possibilities are now on offer, tho many people assume 3 deck mixing is about mixing 3 tunes at the same time, if ever you have succeeded, the overall sound can sound "muddy" due to FREQUENCY issues. Most people I know just use the extra decks to get extra creative…
Tho I’m not saying that this is the same for all DJ’s. DJ Yoda tho, he uses his decks and cd decks with the creative flare in mind.

ProcleusParticipantHow do you set up a station for 3 decks? Most crossfaders are strictly for two decks, so do you get a second solely for the third deck? ANd how do you lay it out? What’s the best way?

What’s the best way?i turn the crossfader off and just use the vertical faders, i have two decks on one side of the mixer and two on the other but i guess there are different ways of doing it

tripmannParticipantstomper wrote:the third deck is not used for scratching. You can scratch with a deck on any channel by using the regular fader instead of the crossfader. You can also use input selector switches or transform buttons but it doesn’t usually sound as good. It’s actually really useful to learn different scratch methods if you play in different clubs with different setups.

djspider96Participantyeah 3 decks are dope how they do it in cali is one on one turntable is the acapella and on the other is the instrumental and finally the 3rd one is the one your going to be scratching on while those 2 are playing you can do a number of different tricks with it like blends etc..

djshadesukParticipantAdeeda wrote:2cdj and 2 turnrables seems standard for full professional right now.Whether that’s down to a DJ’s request or simply flexibility on a venues part is open to debate…
One venue I worked at had a twin CD Denon deck, 2x Pioneer CDJ1000’s and 2x Technics 1210’s… We could also, in times of complete emergency, use either of the 2 booth PC’s (lighting and text-line/video) to play music too (and beatmatch, before all the MP3 ‘DJ’ software was available!). So, all-in-all that was 8 possible sources of audio… very rarely did anyone ever use more than 2 sources at the same time though.
For instance, Flip and Fill used 3, the two 1210’s and a CDJ1000 of which the CDJ was used as nothing more than a sample player (which they used to play the worlds most annoying jingle, a girly voiced "Flip & Fill, in the mix" sample, over the top of everything and as often as possible!)
There’s often times, at some venues I’ve worked at with only 2 CD decks, that I wish I had a third for dropping acapellas and stuff. At one venue I’d carefully setup a nice loop using the beat at the end of one track while continuing to play another song over the top of it… As the second track approached the end I setup a loop using that too. They were both running perfectly in time and it sounded awesome… then I realised I hadn’t got a third deck to get ‘out’ of it!! Removing one of the two tracks would have sounded odd but I had no choice… Well, I did have a choice… I went to the bar leaving the two loops playing (they were that well in time! I haven’t been able to get them that well looped/timed since though!!). Fortunately it was only a small venue and fortunately people saw the funny side of it once they’d realised the pickle I’d got myself into!

coojuiceParticipantNever tried it my self although i’ve used 2 turntables and cds throughout an evening.
Can’t believe no one has mentioned Carl Cox though! lol
Looked for a decent video of him doing his stuff but couldn’t find one
If anyone has any post them here;)

gfreshParticipantI don’t like how you have to cut an acapella short in a live mashup to get the next track ready so yeah, 3 is better. Can’t say I use it very often though. And decks don’t come cheap either……….

simonburrellParticipanti really like either using a third deck or a laptop as a third input just for extra stuff, particularly short acapellas for live remixes which really gives your set a creative aspect

TMParticipant3 decks are great, been rocking this style for quite a number of years now. two decks got boring about 15 years ago, cuing up the second track in about 15 seconds, I realized I needed to add the 3rd deck to keep things interesting. today I use 4 decks, typically the 4th is for effects.

acheadKeymasterIm normally stuck with 2 CDJ’s but always use the 3rd if i can just for acapellas, samples and scratching. Its sooooo much easier than having to rush to get an acapella back into the cd player youve just mixed out of!
