IComeInPeaceParticipantWhat’s up A4U peeps,
Alright, hope this has not been discussed before, and if it has, my apologies.
So I have been wondering about making original remixes, not mashups. I have no issues creating acapellas or midi from audio…my issue lies in the understanding the "rules" or lack there of on how to create a remix.
I understand that tunes start with chord progressions, so as to build all the underlying instruments for the tune. So what if I am unable to find a midi stem pack to purchase for something like My Darkest Days – Porn Star Dancing, how the hell does one remix a tune without knowing the chord arrangement, for at least the bass and leads?
Is it up to the creativity of the remixer…meaning using a software like mixed in key, getting the key, creating the acapella, then going hog wild with just creating your own chord progressions from that key to create all your own original underlying instruments that work with the acapella?
Thanks,

ChunkyEatsMyDinnerParticipantIm gonna give u no constructive advice here, just the reality of my situation…
If u going to drive a car u need to know how to drive,
If your going to remix you need to know how to compose music,
In either situation results will vary but its good fun trying! If ur struggling take a score from a random Midi file with a lot of chords, transpose it to the same key and play around with the notes
until some of it starts to sound good.AdSense 336x280February 20, 2011 at 9:28 pm #685867
Mecalto RossaParticipanti would back that up, personally i don’t use midi pack’s i write my own, but if you are going to, then just tweak them to the key you want!

mcanty5ParticipantA good place to start is just to create a 4-8 bar loop with all the instruments/parts you want, then start making copies of the loop subtracting various parts so you end up with a good number of loops for different parts of the song while maintaining a kind of theme

LenmuzikParticipantYou should listen to the original track like 1000 times and then you can copy the melody from out of your head 😉

AudioTacticsParticipantWith electronic music it def helps to have played an instrument at some point… especially piano since that is what most controllers are based on…
In order to find the root note or key, try letting the track that you are remixing play, then choose a sustained type sound on your soft synth or whatever and hold it down as the track plays. Try each note in the scale (there are 12 notes in an octave)and the least offensive one will probably be the root note or key of the track.
Note that sometimes notes like thirds and fifths (if you don’t know any theory this vocabulary will probably be over your head) will also sound ok, so that to an untrained ear this method might still be a little challenging.
I would def recommend some piano lessons just to get you started maybe. Hope this helps…
