DJ ValParticipantI don’t no what it is but I know i need one

A good friend in support of me to further my production of music has given me a Casio CTK-491. I no this isn’t state of the art eqipment, but it’s just to get me started as I’ve never ever played a keyboard in my life. Makes sense to get a chea one first then if I get the hang of it, I can always upgrade.
It has a midi to usb connection cable. The software programmes that I use to produce my music are:- Soundforge 8, Abode Audition 1.5, Magix Music Maker Deluxe 11 and Cubase SX3.
My question is can I use the keyboard directly into either of the above programmes and would I need a midi controller. I so, what would be the best compatibale one for the casio.
I shall now
myself and tell the truth. I know sh*t all one what a midi controller and midi sequencer are nor would i no how to connnect and use them. There i said it
. Thanks in advance.

DJ ValParticipantHood now i’m more confused than ever. I thought a keyborad was a virtual instrument

Viktor KParticipantA keyboard can’t be a virtual instrument since it’s real.
You probably don’t wanna use the onboard sounds on this keyboard since they are likey to be not so good. But instead you can use it like a midi controller for your virtual instruments. What it does is just send data to the computer with what notes to play and then your software genereates the sound.AdSense 336x280January 24, 2006 at 2:05 am #583561
junoParticipantthink of the midi controller as a regular keyboard without all the the insides. all of the insides/workings r in the Virtual instrument running inside of your program. its just like a Playstation controller – each game u put n the playstation interprets the signals from the controller in a different way (just like VSTs). it isnt hard to setup a midi controller 4 the 1st time if u get good instructions. If u buy one retail or w/ the instructions it’ll give good directions on how to install the drivers & get your program to recognize it & accept signal.
basically you can go 2 dif ways – Hardware = multiple keyboards (or the limit of your patch bay/RAM w/ one) or Software = one keyboard (infinite patches, sounds, slightly more difficult to program IMO).
i put this in another post but if you’re thinking about buying a controller i would get a keyboard with the drum pads. You’ll want thwm – trust me! It makes it so much easier to give your beat flare & record in fills or whatever to make the it sound alive. Its much easier to tap than to click IMO. I use M-Audio Controllers myself but i’d prefer to have 2 n 1.

DJ ValParticipantGuys i just want to thank all of you for all your very helpful replies. To be honest i was starting to go insane with confusion until i read blakey.1‘s reply. His reply convinced me that i wasn’t going insane, thanx blakey.1.
As some of you no, i’ve recently had an operation and still have another 6 to 8 weeks to a full recovery. So until then i think i’ll leave conecting my keyboard, anyway it’s upstairs and i can’t carry it downstairs at the moment. But be sure once it’s connected i will be coming back to this thread with undoubtably the most embarassing questions for you all. So Hood i hope you are a very patient person, cos i think you’re gonna have to be with me, mind you, you can always ignore my questions
.
Before i go, can someone confirm one thing for me. This keyboard i have, has a usb connection, have i lost the plot or can i use this as the controller or do i also have to buy a midi controller. Just using the keyboard as a controller would entail me then to get/use for example softsynths etc
. Thank you again guys.

DJ ValParticipant
Back on this subject again. I eventually got the keyboard from upstairs and guess what the damn thing dosen’t have a usb connection. The leads that came with it don’t even fit my pc. I need one that does have a usb connection because of how my pc is positioned.
I’ve decided to sell it off and get a M-Audio midi controller keyboard. It seems to be a popular make amongst you pros. Not sure what model to get, as the cash is a wee bit short at the moment so it’ll have to be a basic one that’ll do the job. I really don’t need anything fancy as I’ve never played a keyboard in my life.
I don’t no, maybe I should just stick to purchasing sound sample loops ‘n things. I keep asking myself the same question. "Do I really need one of these?".
Anyways guys thanks for all your help so far.

"Do I really need one of these?".I say "do it" because you will become a more improved creator of your work. You can still use ‘loops & samples’, but along with a Beat-Slicer, you can have more control of your loops & samples. But, choose the one you feel most suits your needs, because the choice is getting better.
