Milo123ParticipantIs there any easy way to change a BPM of a track without it sounding pixelated(or whatever the word is, i think you know what i mean ;))
Thanks

Reggie_p75ParticipantNot really…
There is software around to get a better smoother sounding audio, but like everything nice n shiny.. it costs..
My rules r to never go 10 BPM either way of the root BPM of ur loop/track. There is a mild exception to that rule that in time-stretching something faster allows u to get away with a little more so -10 and +10 or +20 BPM sound ok to me… The exception to the faster BPM rule is that pitched acoustic instruments (guitars, pianos n the rest) start to sound unnatural..

Milo123ParticipantHow would I go about timestretching an acapella? I have Reason and Recycle but that’s about it.
Thanks
AdSense 336x280March 4, 2009 at 9:58 pm #665024
Reggie_p75ParticipantI’d say neither r really suited to time-stretching acapellas…..
Ableton or Acid Pro would be ur tool to laying down an instrumental and acapella n adjusting its BPM and the quality would be better than trying to ‘manually’ try to time-stretch in Recycle..
U can download a free version of Acid Express, but Ive got no idea about its features as I’m fortunate enough to have Acid Pro.
I dunno if any other users on here have experience on Acid Express or whether indeed it can be used to do mash-ups…
AdSense 336x280March 5, 2009 at 5:14 pm #665046
Milo123ParticipantWell I have some money put aside and am looking to invest. I’ve seen a lot of good reviews about Acid Pro so it would be great if you could give me a tutorial in it

Thanks in advance

djTLParticipantfl studio is good
AdSense 336x280March 7, 2009 at 8:56 pm #665163
hendrixParticipantI just bought ableton 7 and it kicks ass for changing bpm. It has automation on the master so you can chage bpm wherever you want in the track. Great if you are mashing pellas and loops… paid $299 for it. Upgraded from ableton lite which was included with hardware I bought

BobaParticipantI’ve noticed that higher bitrate MP3s don’t get that timestretch problem as bad.

Reggie_p75ParticipantBoba wrote:I’ve noticed that higher bitrate MP3s don’t get that timestretch problem as bad.If I can avoid it and can source the original from CD I use that
Otherwise I dont bother using MP3s below 256Kbps unless I deliberately want a crunchy sound..
Its .WAV files all the way wherever possible!!!!!
AdSense 336x280March 9, 2009 at 5:48 pm #665250
BobaParticipantI didn’t used to care about that, but now I tend to go for wavs as well. I still rip my CDs as MP3s though.
AdSense 336x280October 26, 2009 at 5:54 pm #673437
DreamviewParticipantI just simply use Audacity… It’s not so bad. It’s very simple and fast to change the BPM.

yessirvankayParticipanti use acid. i thinks its the easiest to use
AdSense 336x280November 26, 2009 at 9:46 pm #674530
ChicagoCheerFXParticipantAcid 7.0 is your best bet as far as re-tempoing a track. The newer "elastique" method of beatmapping in "pro" mode does an excellent job of keeping a track clean during temp changes. The only reason it would sound "pixelated" is if the tempo is altered too much or if the sample is a poor quality

RyujiParticipantboth Live and Audacity is good for this
AdSense 336x280March 16, 2012 at 2:27 pm #691845
gwattParticipantI havent tried Acid but Ableton Live is my choice for re-edits and mashups. For DJ mixes maybe acid is easier I don’t know.

theslagParticipantUsing the Time and Pitch machine in logic retains awesome quality while getting up to really high numbers, like +/- 40
AdSense 336x280May 11, 2012 at 2:01 am #692671
theslagParticipant^ Also good DJ equipment like CDJ-2000’s can make a lot of different. Use a pitch locking feature when using turntables.

fingatipz1982ParticipantLogic Pro
AdSense 336x280April 2, 2013 at 9:41 pm #697854
theslagParticipantYeah Logic pro has a time and pitch machine that sounds relatively decent up to about +30%

nyiddleParticipantFL Studio works pretty damn great for stretching vocals and such, up to a pretty massive extent. And I’m pretty sure it can be done in the demo version of FL Studio that you can download off their website, as the demo version doesn’t really have any limitations other than being able to save .flp files (although you can still export .mp3 and .wav’s and stuff).
It also offers tempo detection, of course, so that works great too. It’s just a matter of importing the clip onto the playlist, then clicking on the little arrow to the left of the name of the audio clip, then clicking "Fit to tempo.." Generally telling it to search between 100-200 bpm will work fine, but if you know the range that the bpm is in it also works to go with that too. It’ll change the tempo, then you can open up the clip properties by double-clicking the clip on the playlist, and set the stretching from "Auto" to "Pro Default" in the drop-down.
You can now change the tempo of your project (up by the play button) and your clip(s) will stretch accordingly, and they’ll also keep whatever pitch they were in (as long as the Pro Default stretching setting is used). I can make a more detailed tutorial (I suppose), if anyone is confused or is interested in how to do this with FLS.
Oh: Also worth mentioning is that things like Traktor offer Pitch Lock and stuff like that, and often times it’ll sound crappy until you go into the Settings and bump the "Pitch Lock" processor usage up to whatever is the highest possible setting. At that point you can stretch up to about 50% speed without it beginning to affect the pitch. For the longest time I didn’t know this, and just avoided using the Pitch Lock :p
AdSense 336x280April 15, 2013 at 12:25 pm #698094
joostvanhooijdonk1ParticipantI think Fl studio is okay at stretching. Not great. I do find that some transients in vocals are lost when stretching it.
Ableton is much better at this kind of stuff and it can stretch real time (i.e. changing tempo directly stretches the sample). In fl studio it has to calculate it (takes some time), which can be annoying when you stretching you acapella when you want it to fit with the track.
@nyiddle. fitting to tempo can work great with loops and complete tracks. In vocals there are no handles to determine the bpm. Mostly i just stretch it untill it fits.
and where are the settings for pitch lock in traktor? never heard of such options, but would be great.
AdSense 336x280May 4, 2013 at 7:37 pm #698388
ombudsmanParticipantizotope made a very good pitch and time stretch product for logic (it gets added to logic’s pitch and time machine) called radius. but it looks like it’s 32 bit only. don’t know if they’re going to release it in 64 bit. also it’s $399.

nyiddleParticipantjoostvanhooijdonk1 wrote:and where are the settings for pitch lock in traktor? never heard of such options, but would be great. For me it’s an option up top where the FX settings and things like that are. If it’s not readily visible you might need to either go into settings or right click on the "drawer" or whatever they call it and add in "Pitch Lock". I know it’s been possible to do since the first Traktor, so whatever version you’re using should definitely offer it.
Also you’re right for the most part, FL Studio isn’t the BEST for stretching and matching vocals to tracks, but it definitely gets the job done. And a lot of times if it can’t detect the BPM of a vocal (which it can sometimes, believe it or not) I just use Traktor and then have it fit to the BPM that I detected.

clearybuzzParticipantcomplex warp in ableton works the best for most tracks that i use for house/techno
AdSense 336x280June 5, 2013 at 1:56 am #698866
Phero_ProdParticipantyou should try using the beats algorhythm in Ableton. You can change it to 16ths, one directional and 50% on the meter to get cool arps.
