grotesqueParticipantI’ve got a bunch of my cds that don’t show up when i put them in my laptop. they play fine on a normal player so i figure it’s some copy protection. Any got a way around it?

anisinaParticipantIf there is no sign of any kind of CD/DVD (including the drives not appearing) then it might be worth checking the ASAPI drivers. It is not unknown for them to disappear, especially when Wavelab is even mentioned.
If it doesn’t match the above, then I would say it is either Copy Protected, or has a Video on the disc, and this can cause the symptoms. Though, if I am correct, you should be able to extract the audio (CDA file) in various software. There should be some free that might be found in Google.

Are they cdr’s, cd-rw’s or just RETAIL audiocd’s ?
What you think might be copy protection MIGHT just be that your Laptop doesn’t recognize a certain type of CD media… could be.

SeanzaParticipantA had this exact problem and it got really annoying when a wanted to burn a CD or DVD.
What anisina said about the drivers is probably the most common thing. But what a found was when a restarted me PC with the CD/DVD already in the tray, it would recognise it but ofcourse nobody wants to reboot just to read a disc. So definately have a look at your CD/DVD drive properties.
If you’re using Windows you can get into the Device Manager via the Control Panel.
So click your Start menu icon, select conrtol panel. Please be sure to have the Control Panel view in Classic mode (i.e. NOT a blue background, just white with alot more icons) then double click System, single-click the Hardware tab on the window that appears there then select Device Manager, right click on your disc drive (assuming you can see it) and select ‘Update Driver’.
If that doesn’t help, try re-installing the drive from the discs that came with your computer.

grotesqueParticipantSorry bout the vagueness! I’m mildly retarded when it comes to computers. They’re all retail audio cds and they’re all a few years old but still in good condition. i reckon updating the drivers will probably help.
cheers for the replies!

grotesqueParticipantBit of a weird outcome! I took one of the cds i’ve been having trouble with to work and put it in one of the macs and it worked fine, got it ripped, then out of curiosity chucked it into my bosses mac laptop and it spat it straight back out! The desktop that it worked in is old as buggery and the laptops are pretty new! Don’t know what’s goin on!
