dcmusicParticipantIn your opinion, do you think somebody with a bad voice, if they get vocal training from a singing teacher, can end up with a reasonable voice?

LexusParticipantHey Bro,
I think that with Vocal Training anyone can carry a Tune, My cousin wants to be an actress and her only downfall was she had a terrible sininging voice…. She had sininging lessons for two years and is now on a stage show which involves her singing (she aint half bad either)…. So in answer to your question – Yes I do…
Peace

tim.gosdenParticipantWhen you say reasonable it might not get any better than reasonable! I mean, its alright if your in the studio and don’t do live, you can do lots of takes and use pitch correction or a program like melodyne. In answer though, I do agree with Lexus, you can learn to sing. BUT those who can naturally sing/have a natural musical talent will always be able to sing better [even if the tone of there voice is weird!

TubbyParticipantTim & Lexus are right. You can learn to sing reasonable. But then again, what is a bad voice? It depends also on what you’re aiming at. Listen to Bob Dylan or Tom Waits, lots of people love them so in the end it all comes down to taste as well, and knowing how to use your voice

dcmusicParticipantI agree, it depends on what you determine what is a "reasonable voice". An excellent voice would be somebody like kelly clarkson.
By reasonable, I mean not having to hold 10 second long notes and using "vocal gymnastics" but I mean singing in tune, in the right pitch, following the melody. I mean do you think you work with a voice that is considered out of tune/pitch?AdSense 336x280April 15, 2006 at 11:56 am #588379
dcmusicParticipantI know this sounds dodge, but is there a way to "train up your voice" without get a teacher, like an internet tuturial that you practice every day?

TubbyParticipantWell, I think if you’re kinda serious about it, try a lesson or two just to get a few excersises and see where it takes you, better learn it good right away than start off with some dodgy techniques. The 2 lessons won’t put you in financial dispair but will help you further

JuggernautParticipanti’d pretty much agree with what everyone’s said here but will add if you just want to improve your singing yourself listen to singers whom you like and try to imitate how they sing. i used to do that before i took up professional singing lessons for a short spell. In all honesty i’d just take up some lessons if you’re serious about it. Like tubby said you don’t want to get some dodgy/bad techniques into your head from the get go. for example breathing is really REALLY important. how you manage it for singing will determine if you’re throat will cope even after 20 mins and the quality of your singing too (sing from your stomach rather than your throat. those kinda things)

RTFParticipantI think the best way to train yourself in something like that is the simplest: use a tape recorder or a PC with a mic, and just endlessly sing into it and play yourself back. Most people, especially without musical training, really don’t know how they sound from outside, and the constant singing and playback is the only way to train yourself to learn and control your own voice without the expert feedback you’d get from a teacher.
Really, I’d recommend some sort of lessons, at least to start. If you’re still in school, see if there’s a singing class you can get into, and pay double attention in music classes to learn the theories. If you’re into church look into the choir or something. Otherwise, a lot of professional singing teachers might have cheap beginner lessons.
Singing is something I think not everyone can be great at, but 99% of people can at least get by with the right training.
