gcby30ParticipantLong time reader, first time poster, although have been remixing for a while. Great site!
I’ve just tried my hand at a DIY acapella – ‘let’s stay together’ by michelle williams (the old classic). itunes had both original and instrumental so was looking good. Sadly no michelle williams acapellas on this lovely site it seems.
I’ve matched it all up tight in logic, but the hi-hats are coming through annoyingly strong (and the organ, but to a lesser extent). I’ve read that drums are hard to get out as they are on the same freq as voice…but what’s odd is that at the beginning of the track it’s just hihats, and those aren’t canceling themselves out. Shouldn’t they at least do it in a section where there are no vocals?
Tracks are on itunes if anyone wants to have a play – I’m baffled. Advice?

AJ121remixParticipantI’m not familiar with logic, but audacity at least has a noise removal feature, to get rid of the hi-hats I’d try getting the noise profile of a hi-hat sound and doing the noise removal effect at a noise reduction level of anywhere from 14-24 dB
If logic has a similar function than just translate what I said
No clue if it’d work, to be honest, but it’s just what I’d try.AdSense 336x280October 1, 2011 at 10:34 pm #689309
Tion LineParticipantIf you have a real instrumental you should be very happy!
Because then you just have to match them up (it MUST be very exactely – the more the better) and invert the acapella (that means you invert the amplitude of the sound wave) – in FL there is an option ‘reverse polarity’, dunno if in logic there is something else – so the instrumental will remove itself from the original and leave the acapella (in theory…).
Or you just use "knockout" or "kn0ckout" which is a free vst plugin – you should be able to in logic i think – and remove the instrumental with it.
I don’t know why i wrote this, you can read it dozen times here in the forum and probably know it already, but if not, you do now^^However, if you did it as told above you shoud receive a more or less good acapella, but it doesn’t make any sense to me that only the hihats remain, they should probably be the same in the instrumental as in the original… Are u sure you matched them up really exactely (zoom in A LOT)?
