The CutterParticipantI was just wondering how many members played musical instruments( no turntables, samplers etc) and what they played. Just curious to see how everyone who plays music uses these skills when they create beats and DJ etc.
I have been playing bass for 12 years, percusion for 5 years and tinkering with drum kits for about 3 years( I have a set but don’t get to play it as much as I would like to).
I know that this has helped me with timing greatly and has given me the abiltiy to cut stuff up like crazy and helps me when creating drum beats and bass lines etc.
Let me know what you think,

acapellaKeymasterMy tool of choice is the drums. Don;t have a kit anymore but would love some of those V-Drums for sure. 2nd instrument is keyboard and after that I play a little bit on the guitar.

ordioParticipantFirst instrument was piano from an early age. Then I got a set of drums which the neighbours loved, so I sold them.
Then something called Akai sampler and Atari ST come along. Still play a lot of piano to relax and keep my fingers supple for turntablism

If you can’t afford a V Drum kit(even a used one) you can make one yourself. What you need is a practice set( it’s a bunch of practice pads that is set up like a V-Drum Kit without the electronics) and just by the triggers and connections etc. If you know how to sauder this can easily be done. The only other thing you would need is like an alesis DM5 or a some kind of drum module. I had a friend do this and it tunred out pretty well.

The biggest gig I ever did was when I performed with my colleges Jazz Band at the University of Florida other than that it’s been small clubs/bars and house parties with my old band Ard-Ri( translation: HIGH KINGS it’s celtic).

It’s been a while… I bought myself a diaphragm mic the other day, so I should be recording my own vox again.
The last band I was in was a punk band based in Slough, but I got kicked out for going to Fabric and not getting any sleep the night before a gig. I was so spangled by the time the gig came round I forgot most of the words, so I made them up. I thought it was fookin’ hilarious, but I was in a minority!

I played in my schools african drum ensemble for a year. Gun, Go, Do, Gun, Go, Do, Gun( the mother rythm) and why not throw in a couple of Pa Ta’s while your at it.

Nuclear FlowerParticipantwell I have been playing guitar for 20 years. I have played with several professional recording artists, with the blues entertainers of the year in Detroit, and I am a professional instructor in the instrument as well as music theory. I play the drums and bass and a reasonable amount of keyboard. I played the alto and tenor saxophones for 6 years in school, the sousaphone (tuba) for 2 and percussion for 1. I started dj’ing back in 1998 and started producing shortly after that. However, I still play guitar for at least 2 hours a day when I’m not teaching, and I play the drums at least 4 times a week for about an hour. I just plain love music in all its forms.

Guitar (Lead, Rhythm, acoustic, and some classical)
Bass
Drums (including Double Kicks)
Keyboard
Piano (theres a little difference from Keyboard)
Mixing Desk (an Instrument!!!)Thats it. Theres a story behind it, but I’m in a procrastinating mood.
AdSense 336x280December 30, 2006 at 7:58 pm #608436

JuggernautParticipanti know this is a little bit off topic…but i just spoiled myself and bought a guitar. Thing is i think my fingers are too broad due to playing bass and cello (i’ve got callouses on my finger tips).
So as a result i keep on catching other strings and it’s bugging me….anyone got any tips? and don’t say keep on practicing, coz i’ll just call you a smart ass
AdSense 336x280December 31, 2006 at 1:13 am #608462
anisinaParticipantJuggernaut wrote:Thing is i think my fingers are too broad due to playing bass and cello (i’ve got callouses on my finger tips). To be brutally honest, the guitar was a wrong choice. If your fingers are broad the Bass (or any other ‘thick’ stringed instrument) is almost a perfect match.
Seriously, practice will help you, but you will be restricted by the broadness of your fingers to play Lead. Rythym should be good.
AdSense 336x280December 31, 2006 at 1:52 am #608464
JuggernautParticipantyeah had a few people saying i should try rhythm too. I can’t be doing with buying a double bass and i’m still saving up for another oboe.
Just realised this thread is over a year old…

Viktor KParticipantGreat thread! Suprised I didn’t see it before.

Right now im practicing on learning keyboard/piano better and I love it. Just need to buy a better Master Keyboard now
AdSense 336x280January 13, 2007 at 4:00 am #609750
