hiphopfanParticipantSorry if this topic has already been covered before but I was recently listening to the West Sounds project (various Kanye West Acapellas remixed with the Beach Boys Pet Sounds Album – similar to the Jay Z remix albums) and I just wondered if any of the producers on the board have attempted anything similar ?? (limiting your choice of material to one source in order to make an entire remix lp)
If so, how did you find the experience ??
For instance, perhaps it was quite straightforward to start with (obvious, loops, drums etc) but got a bit tougher towards the end ?? (I’m sure it would depend greatly on what you used !!)

The CutterParticipantI am in the early stages of tyring to do a whole remix album. So far the most difficult issue I am dealing with is trying match up acapellas with music that is in key/tune or somewhat close to eachother. Once I get past this everything should start to fall in place(with a little work of course).
Is there a link or something where I could check out the West Sound Project mixes? Let me know.

hiphopfanParticipantThanks very much for the response and of course, best of luck !! You can find the west sound project at http://www.kanyewestsounds.com (I hope this doesn’t break any advertising rules on the board, I apologise if it does, I’m not endorsing it and it’s completely free)

The CutterParticipantThanks for the link. I’ll check it out.

In SilicoParticipantThanks for that link….now I have a good idea of what I hope to never have produced in my name or using my music.
That is the single most terrible mash-up album I have ever heard. I especially like Through the Wire where it’s the original, terrible song, with a beach boys clip at the end.
Lame, not cool, weak…no.talent.involved.

I’m so tired of this sellout bullshit. Can someone please come up with a new genre to idolize for no apparent reason?-r

Yeah it was pretty bland. I was expecting it to be a lot better. But now I know not what to do.

hiphopfanParticipantI think it was a pretty strange choice in the first place (the two sources don’t complement each other) that has backfired spectacularly !! Obviously the guy had seen the success of Dangermouse’s Grey Album and thought he could be the next big thing but infact, it highlighted his lack of ability as a producer.
I think I’d rather see a remix using the Beach Boys acapellas !!

Mellow MadnessParticipantok this is related to the topic and at the same time its not…..

Exactly what I said as soon as I heard the lack of good mixing on that album….it would rule to have some BB pellas over some dope beats…instead of some original hip hop with some minimal BB samples in it…
I’m tryin’ to figure out what ‘Wouldn’t it be Nice’ goes over….not too much as far as I can tell…but thank hell for Ableton’s warp function

ich_schein_heiligParticipantthere is also an mobb deep/ bob marley mash-up. i first thougt it was whack, but after some listenings i liked it very much, because it sounds very different to the usual mobb deep stuff.
i also tried to make something similiar; i did an rolling stones/ beastie boys mash-up. i can post a link, if s.o. wants to listen.
