SI PAULParticipantHi Will.
I have been using decks for the past 12 years..
I started off with a couple of belt drive turntables and a cheap mixer..
I wasnt going to spend much if it turned out I couldnt do it..
Turned out I could do it and loved it.
I then invested in 2 Technics 1200’s ( direct drive )
If you want to scratch then you need direct drive to get that quick response.
With todays technology you can get a cd player with all the versatility of a turntable + a lot more.
If you practice you can become just as great on each..
the CD mixers are more expensive but cheaper to keep up with in regards to buying tunes.
If you want to start putting your mixes into your computer, Cds would be better..
All you need is a computer with a Line in input(or microphone) plug the output of your mixer into the Line in or mike in.
If your running windows Xp you can record your mix straight into your computer. There are loads of computer music programs out ther starting from as little as a tenner. Right up to silly money..Hope ive helped.

The CutterParticipantHi Will,
I’m not a dj so my experience does not deal with scratching, dj’ing etc.. but my advice is to go to a local music store and ask to test them out. If the sales person is really interested in making the sell(weither you buy or not) they are usaully more than happy to let you play with the gear.
I am always in the habbit of playing with the gear first.

JuggernautParticipantadding on to the CD turntables, industry standard is Pioneer…be it the CDJ800 or it’s big brother the CDJ1000. Don’t go near the CDJ800mk2 just yet. the CDJ1000mk3’s have only just come out too and are real nice to play on (as they finally play mp3 cd’s) but the price tag is up there.
Although they’re not "common" industry standard, Denon DNS-3000, DNS-3500 (new just out!) and DNS-5000 are all good cd turntables too that have a rotating platter and seem to do the job nicely.
