mike001ParticipantHi,
I’m thinking of changing from Pc to Mac Pro ( dont want an imac) need it to be of use for 5 years.
First of all are Mac’s really that much better than Top end Pc’s such as Scan Pc
( http://3xs.scan.co.uk/ShowSystem.asp?SystemID=1118 ).
I want to be able to have 3 people jaming on virtual synths, and record audio from a guitarist at the same time, with effects and other vst’s sequenced and playing without the system Screwing up and Crashing (really fed up of that).
Which would be best a Quad core or 8 core for my home studio.
Do they work as 64bit or 32bit and can you make them dual boot for Windows OS.
Can you put an extra Hard Drive in them on purchase.
They only have 5 Usb ports so can you pre instal more as would use them up instantly (hubs are no good as they share the same IRQ).
How much Ram to have ( stupid question as usually as much as you can get).
Which audio interfaces work best with them Was thinking of £300ish ( dont need lots of live inputs ).
Which connection Fire wire or Usb.
Do most of the Vst’s work on them.
Can you use effects and synths from Cubase in Logic and from Logic in Cubase?Mike001

You are asking a lot more than just "Which Mac Pro".
The standard Mac Pro is good for you! It doesn’t actually seem like you need to be doing much!
Mac Pro can 64bit!
It can Dual Boot Windows XP, 7!
The basic Mac Pro at the moment is a Quad core but because of Hyper Threading, it’s considered an 8 core virtually!
You can purchase an extra harddrive and you receive the Mac Pro with it inside!
You cannot pre-install more USB ports. PCI-E cards or USB Hubs is the only way.
Yes, as much Ram as possible, lol. I’d recommend a minimum of 6 GB!
Get Firefire connection for your Audio interface if you are thinking about getting a Mac Pro!
You need to do your own research on which VST Plugins do and do not work on the Mac OS X!
You cannot cross-use default programs VST Plugins. You cannot use Logics native synth with Cubase for example! (From what I know!)Hope this helps some!

tjsmithfieldParticipanta MacPro will last for years given it’s power is way beyond what any audio program can throw at it (video is a DIFFERENT story).
Go 8 core and buy as much memory as you can (aftermarket, though… Apple charges way too much for it). OWC is usually a good source
You can get 4 hard drives into the box, and can probably add more by adding another controller or taking out the CD drive.
Apple will be releasing new Mac Pro’s next year, so it may be worth waiting to pick up the prior models at a discountMany programs are 64 bit, but some have yet to reach that yet along with some plugs.
It all depends on what you are looking to use.I’m currently running a 4 year old 2.8ghz 8 core machine with 10gb of ram and 5 TB of storage. Only thing I had to update
was the video to comply with the OpenGL standard for my video programs. Audio interfaces are an ‘antiquated’ MOTU 424 PCI card
hooked up to 1224 and a 308. (12 year old technology). Run anything I want in Logic Pro with no problems . The only time things
get slow is when I am doing intense video stuff in after effects or Premier Pro… but, that will bring any system to its knees.if you can do without the PCI slots… the iMacs are actually incredibly fast and can put my machine to shame.

zodjenkinsParticipantyou can buy a nice USED macbook pro on ebay or a reputable site/ business which sells them. Just look on line.I paid $125 for a 2008 mackbook pro & updated the hd to a 1 tb hybrid drive ( $75 ) & added 6 gigs of ram ( $125 ), & a 4 tb ext drive ( $99).
I have mines hooked up to 2 32 in insignia 32 in tv/ monitors ( $169 best buy) & a surround sound system.you dnt have to do much to them…… might buy an external port hub next.
