HyperstateParticipantHi all!!
Just thought I’d share a little tip I have been using recently to turn a half-decent DIY acapella into a decent one… you will need cool edit for this although i guess you could find other stuff that would do a similar thing.
So… you have your DIY pella, but there is a whole heap of hi end elements left… hihats, all the tops of synths etc. Most people would just cut a load of the high end off, but this can leave you with a dull acapella… there is another option!
Trick 1: Use noise reduction. Cool edits’ is excellent, you can adjust the floor level until you have enough high end to maintain quality, yet remove some of those irksome sounds running through the vocal.
Trick 2: Use noise removal. Both cool edit & waves X-Noise can perform noise reduction. This works by taking a profile of a portion of sound, then removing this profile from what you set it to. So, if you can find a portion of the offending hat loop / synth sound by itself, you can get a profile of this noise then remove it from the rest of the pella.Trick 2 doesnt present itself often but when it does, can be an amazing tool… I once used it to remove a 4bar guitar loop that was running through a movie sample, leaving the vocal in perfect condition! Trick 1 can be utilised in most situations tho.
Hope this helps someone!

HyperstateParticipantErmmmm it does the trick for me?
I’m a professional dance music engineer so I’m not just some random who’s talking shite on the net 😉
Are you using cool edit to do the noise removal? Did you experiement at all with various settings in noise removal function, or just try it and it didnt work the first time so you thought "oh it fails"

djcodemanParticipantno i played around with it quite a bit…. just always ends up either leaving artifacts when using too much, or removes too much bass from the voice… just my 2cents… what exact settings are u using that makes it sound so good???
im using adobe audition to do the noise removal…

MAXMILLIONAIREParticipantthe noise reduction feature in both cool edit pro and adobe audition are very powerful, but with diy’s it’s more a trial and error type thing.
