tweakfreqParticipantI’m trying to get the ball rolling here. I’ve been working as a studio engineer for about 3 years now and I have to expand. I got the gear to get started (minus a lighting rig), but I need to know what people want to hear. You know besides the top 40. Are there any good songs lists that can get me started.

JuggernautParticipantcheck out people’s charts on here…it depends on what your crowd wants. if they’re your generic over 40’s then housey charty commercial music may or may not sit well with them.
You definately need to know your crowd if you’re going down the way of seeking their approval first before ‘educating’ them with your own preferred songs.

mrvpParticipantI have posted something similar before – http://www.acapellas4u.co.uk/topic36110.html – I have about 16 days of music (and that’s with me just being picky probably only 40% of my collection) and never had the ability to mix before. Got Ableton, and I am having real difficulty expressing myself in a set form.
Do you go up in bpm (i.e. start with hip hop at 90bpm, go to pop at 110bpm, house at 120bpm, progressive at 130bpm, breaks and drum and bass at up to 150bpm – all figures approximate)
Do you do it by genre (i.e. all house at same tempo)
Or do you just make a statement (my current favourite – throwing Michael Jackson or Madonna tracks – not remixes either – into house sets, yes I need to grow up – can throw accas or movie dialogue in or effects as well).
Do you take people on a journey (have a 40 track mix planned in the bpm style as suggested above with about 7 different kinds of music – i.e. mixing Metallica with house records).
Throw your own re-edits in (easy to do with Ableton, make a bootleg if needs be – make it unique)I know what you mean though it would really be helpful to see one of those monumental sets that people talk about for years to come and see what was played (i.e. from a Dance point of view, Carl Cox 4 hour set@Space, Ibiza ’99, – or the first time he dropped his French Kiss/Let It Roll Bootleg live – 1991~ish, or Oakenfold’s Goa Trance Mix (94) – loads of others like the 10 hour sets from Tenaglia).
Hope this helps,
