coojuiceParticipantI’ve finally got a list together of components for building my PC.
They are:
MOBO – Intel DP35DP
CPU – Core 2 Duo E6500
RAM – Corsair 2x1GB DDR2 XMS2 6400C4 TwinX with Heat Spreader
HDD – 2 x 250GB Seagate Barracuda, SATA2, 7200RPM, 8MB Cache
Case/PSU – MESH Midi-TowerATX Case + 550W PSU
CD/DVD Drive – Samsung 24x DVD COMBO SLIM BARE DRIVE
Graphics Card – Gigabyte GeForce 7300GS 256MB/512MB TC DDR2 PCIE DVI HDTV
I can purchase these for £421.68
On top of this i’ll need a sound card but i’m looking at a mixer/soundcard combo so still to decide on this. I’ll also be purchasing Windows XP Home SP2 for the OS. I will also need a monitor, keyboard, mouse but this isn’t essential just now. Another thing i’ve still to decide on too is speakers.
Software wise, i’m getting Pro Tools LE with an Mbox Mini and Reason 4.
I’d just like to know if all the parts i’ve choosen are compatable with each other before I go ahead with buying them. I think they are but would like some confirmation if anyone can help.
Still looking at other equipment such as midi keyboard etc but I can use some of the stuff I have just now.
Is there anything obvious i’ve missed? Do I need to purchase cables, plugs etc?
Any help appreciated;)

ChunkyEatsMyDinnerParticipantNot really answering your question as I have little experience building PC’s, but you may want look into replacing some of the standard fans with quiet ones if they are not already. Also PSU’s can be very noisy. Try a web search for ‘whispertec’ I dealt with them a few years ago and bought very quiet components for broadcast applications.
Regarding the sound card and keyboard, Im an M-Audio fan, (which is specifically designed for Pro Tools compatibility) you get a lot for your cash, check out Dolphin Music
http://www.dolphinmusic.co.uk/
They also have surprisingly good support and technical knowledge if you speak to the right people.
And to save a few pennies, get a quote from Turnkey if they also have the same equipment and Dolphin will price match it.
Ive had bad experiences with Turnkey tho so buy from them at your own risk!AdSense 336x280January 7, 2008 at 1:06 am #640936
anisinaParticipantFor motherboard, I’d go with what manufacturer many use with that chipset, and report as reliable.
For everything else, go with a fanless GFX card (has heatsinks) and a PSU that is as silent as possible. And, make sure you get a silent type fan for the cpu. And a case fan that is quiet’ish.
Look for a Zalman like this…… that matches the processor socket.

remixblue101ParticipantI don’t know if you’ve already gone through with this build or not, but you should look at the Intel Q6600 processor quad core processor. The E6500 buffer is a little low.

BeauZayParticipantQuestion…..did u end up getting all that? and did it run good with pro tools? because my current motherboard’s chipset isn’t letting me record audio…so does that processor and motherboard run pro tools smoothly?

coojuiceParticipantHi guys, nope still not got round to building it yet! money has been saved up for my wedding firstly…
Looking to get the ball rolling again once i’m back from Oz in the summer.
The spec I listed is dated now so i’ll have to have a re-think on the components nearer the time.
BeauZay: I’ve not got any programs yet as i’ve not done the build but i’m still looking to get Pro Tools LE 7.4 when I get round to it. Although i’ve changed what I was going to get MANY times! lol. It’s a toughy trying to go with what you think is best!
What type of MOBO, CPU etc do you have?

coojuiceParticipantJust thought i’d close this topic by saying that after all the research I did (and believe me it was A LOT!) I finally decided on…
A new 20", 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM, 250GB HD imac! lol
Just got this a couple of weeks ago and bought logic studio and i’m very happy with it!
I bought the cheapest one avaliable from the apple store (student discount) and upgraded the RAM myself.
Other items that I got were:
M-Audio Fast Track Ultra Audio Interface
2 x 500GB WD My Book Studio HD (One for time machine, one for projects)
M-Audio Axiom 49 Keyboard
Mackie MR8 Monitors (Still not arrived yet!)
Sony MDR-V700 HeadphonesAnd some other bits and pieces.
I’m about 90% done with setting up my home studio and look forward to actually producing some tracks to upload instead of downloading them from here! lol
I’ll post some pics of the studio once completed.
Hopefully I can get my diy acoustic treatment finished over the next couple of week…

gumdrop32ParticipantI have a little situation with the computer I’d built myself. It would be real embarrassing for a computer person to see especially when you created yourself.
