Part_Time_MonkParticipantWord Ya’ll-
I’ve been making beats for a while but have never had a real opportunity to hear somebody spit on them. a4u has been great for this… bpmdatabase.com + this website has made my life beautiful.
So with the disclaimer that this song might be classified as aggrivated assult to your ears (and offensive to outkast), I give you my first mashup.
Samples are taken from Harvey Mandel‘s Christo Redentor and from other places in the stax of wax floating around my room. The song is "Elevators" by Outkast from the amazing ATLiens.
PLEASE let me know how I can improve mixing. My monitors are nearly shot. I’ve never worked with mixing acapellas before. Up until now…I’ve just been beat production.
Tell me tricks about how you blend, eq, balance, compress and limit your vocals. Do I mix center channel? Pan certain freqs? I’ve got a million questions.
Thanks ahead of time.
If you make a comment, leave a link to a track you’d like to get heard. I’ve tried to leave comments around a4u, helping with whatever limited tips and tricks I know. I’ll do my best to return the favor.
Peace, word is born

MicahvellianParticipantPTM,
Word. Very tight. I love how the female vocal and everything are in tune together. Fits very nicely.
With that said, don’t be afraid to push the main vocals up in the mix. It gets kind of lost especially because the female vocal sample is in a higher frequency range. Stuff in the higher frequencies tend to be perceived as being louder naturally. You may even want to turn her voice down a smidge.
As far as mixing vocals, it’s always very tricky. You may want to boost the mids up a bit so they can sit nicely in the mix. You have to be very aware of a vocalist’s range sits and adjust accordingly to the beats/instruments. I would hesitate using some compression only because theoretically the acapella has been compressed already. But if you feel like you need to, the compression should be very slight.
If you have any more questions just email me.
–cheers
