rinski2000ParticipantI’ve been using fruity loops for a few years now, Im no pro ive just been playing around trying to make some music. Im into alot of hard dance and trance. Of course ive been trying to make some songs like i listen to. I can get the rythm sounding good, the percusion sounding funky and the songs sound quite good. But i just cant seem to get the tunes sounding right, the melodies just have something missing and i cant figure it out, i dont know how to describe it but it just doesnt seem to have the astmoshere and feel of pro’s music. I cant seem to get a synth to sound right, its either not sharp and clear enough, but its also not quite got the floaty kind of sound trance does its getting very frustrating
. I also am in the prosess of making a hardstyle track and i really what to play with that reverse bass spond but i cant get it to sound right either, its just not powerful enough and doesnt quite flow. ANy sugestions would be great, im just trying to learn bit there is only so much i can teach myself, I am however going to SAE to study this kind of stuff in a years time but i want a bit of a head start. Thankyou. Ryan.

junoParticipantI definetly feel the same way with FL sometimes. I think the sound has a lot to do with the samples you use but most important is something that you can find in all sound equipment. Say if you convert an .wav to an .mp3 at different bit rates or frequencies – it will make the outcome sound better or worse. Its pretty much the same with other types of music software only its happening continuously – different programs read the track at a higher rate of sampling than others. You can tell a big difference if you go from cheaper software like ACID DJ or Fruity Loops to something like Live or ProTools. I’ve found its best to use FL in a combo of programs. I make loops with it and then piece them together on another sequencer that works better for laying out tracks.

WiperParticipantIf you wanna quality sounds, first you have to spend more than just a couple of hours on producing it… I’ve been working for about 2 years with FL, almost everyday, all day long, and ii still get to the same problems. With FL, creating drumloops aint no problem, but the sound… There’s a litle twitch there: Try not to use the FL’s plugins (exept the Sytrus – awaysome), or if you use them NEVER make more than one chanel containing them. May be exeptions, rarely. Use more powerful synths, try to get something that doesnt sound flat all the time. First understand that good sound is complex, even if it sounds simple. Powerfull attack, coverage of wide range of frequencies, some effects (always a subtile or an extreme eff.), weird sounds… and so on… any of these can be used to make a good sound. But never make a flat sound, as it will sound like it came out of an arcade game…
One more thing – you would be suprised how much some types of noise feel good to ear. And ofcourse > postprocess – add delay to make the sound feel funkier or slower, or in most cases “float”
. Equalize, Reverb it, Phase it, anything… Just experiment to get what you want. Engeneering a sound isnt just about using presets that other made. To get it right U must set every parametre by yourself. And remember – it can never sound perfect, just icredible
Another tip – make layers (remember? the channals which don’t make sound but connect other channals in to one unified). This will seriously affect the power and wideness.
I could talk about this all thay long, but i gotta go, or im gonna get killed. Sorry about the crappy layout of the post, i’ll edit it if i have the time.

dj_stingParticipantHey Juno thats some pretty good advice about FL. I think I’ve run into those exact same problems that you did, and my sounds didn’nt sound anywhere near as complex as say paul van dyk or ferry corsten. The sytrus plugin is really good, but I don’t presently have enough ram to fully use it. The one good thing I liked about FL tho is I downloaded this external VSTi plugin called Morphology that could be used in FL, and it had some amazing atmospheric properties to it. But other than that…I’m still a huge Reason fan until someone proves me otherwise
lol

junoParticipant[quote quote="Shplarz":fbxpgp6g]
i think the fl playlist is simple and lovely. for some reason, it allowed hyper-precision, but has recently stopped. i mean by that that it would move the loop within 10ths of a millimeter, even when i was in less magnified views… very fing annoying, though it’s stopped now thankfully. anyone know why it was/is like that?[/quote:fbxpgp6g]
I know what you’re talking about – that started happening for me when I upgraded to version 5.0 so I just thought that it was a new feature. It never did that on 4.0 for me….the only place you could drop the loop was at the beginning of the measure.Shplarz wrote:incidentally, i’ve noticed that a lot of the most succesful beats in hiphop have BASIC melodies. like, listen to the main synth in in da club, or half of g-unit’s material, or so much other stuff .. i dunno, anyone know why that is?They’re all in 4/4 time -> meaning they’re all based on a kick-snare-kick-snare pattern where each fall on the first quarter note of each bar. Its hard for me to explain……Its pretty much just a basic rythm that most people feel naturally from listening to music. That also makes it easier for the MC to do his/her thing.

ocoolParticipantOk, first i have to say that i hasn’t read the replies on this post.
But gettin the perfection in FL isnæt easy.
What u need is good VST plugins, like Vanguard, Z3ta, Superwave Trancepro ++. And you need to use the right effects like reverb, delay, compressor, eq ++ right too. The mastering is very important. One to loud clap sound can fuck up u’r whole track.
But u know, it’s all about practice,
one day u’ll find out exactly what to do!AdSense 336x280February 10, 2005 at 7:52 am #568610
DJBabyboiParticipantthey have some tutorials that you can read. Learn what the different FX’s do and why they’re there. Like the earlier posts said, it’d be good to add VST plugins. Mess with the Cut off filter. Add A Flanger / Phaster. EQ your instrument.
Vanguard, superwave, albino are a few good VSTi’s for making trance leads and saws. You could look into propellerheads Reason software also.AdSense 336x280February 15, 2005 at 12:12 pm #568743
ddoubleParticipanti have foudn the layering trick can be really usefull, but sometimes it can get too crowded in the mix
what sort of swing are people using?
and is there a way of putting swing on one note only instead of the whole composition?
