Forever13ParticipantHi,
It’s not full-length, it’s my first mixed track (I generally play keyboard and guitar), and I will work more on it, but would like to get your thoughts.
I’ve had a go at writing a short and fairly gentle electro house track with Beyonce’s ‘If I Were A Boy’ vocals. The vocal track probably needs some TLC – however they fitted my idea for a first stab at creating something.
I know there are some properly talented people on the forum, so please don’t hold back – it’s a hobby and I’m here for some pointers and constructive criticism…!
Cheers,

AestheticizeAnalogParticipantThe production is actually quite well done. So on the production/mixing front i really have no qualms. The only thing I would say is that there may be a little bit too much reverb, but if you are going for an almost ambient vibe, the reverb works.
The track itself is not really my cup of tea–My only advice would be that if you are trying to feature melody and are going to have a bassline that does not really groove but sticks to steady eighths than you should avoid using a house rhythm. Once again this is just personal preference, but I find that the four to the floor rhythm is very good at giving lots of space for syncopation and groove. So it gives you lots of space to feature rhythm, but if you have a more melodic focused track it is sometimes a good idea to make it rhythmically interesting by varying up the beat, so that there is some kind of syncopation and groove.

Forever13ParticipantThanks for this AA, exactly the pointers I was looking for.
I’m a complete beginner on the production side, so just getting used to the software to build rhythms up is something I definitely need to work on.
I wouldn’t say the track is my cup of tea musically either! But the vocals were on hand and it gave me something pretty easy to work with.
I’ll keep at it – thanks again for the reply

filthyjokerParticipantGood start
I’d put in more bass, and less phaser effect on the vocals, dim them down a little too and increase the background music

Forever13ParticipantThanks for the advice – I’ve created ‘my second track’ and it’s come out much much better – attached here.
Again, I’d very much welcome any criticism!
Cheers for now, hope you’re enjoying your weekends.

tim.gosdenParticipantHey mate,
Great for a first go – you’ve obviously got a musical ear as everything is in key etc.
Couple thoughts on the Beyonce:
– it’s shame the quality of the pella is quite grainy, sounds like a DIY. Maybe you can find a better program for time stretching it?– the drums could really be pushed to the front of the mix to give it more energy
– it sort of sits in it’s own genre right now, a top tip is to learn to reference commercial tracks and see WHAT they have done to create that sound, analyse how the kick sounds, how the bass is interacting with it, how the hi hats are sitting on top, the different levels the instruments take and what dominates
‘Everybody’s Free’ sounds cool – I’d love to hear you being more creative though, great to remix but try and give it some new chords, a new vibe, something new that no one has heard before!
Keep it up buddy!
Cheers, Tim

Forever13ParticipantThanks Tim, all good stuff!
Yep, the Beyonce one now sounds awful to me – I’m obviously learning, slowly and surely!
I’ll take more time over the next one, give it more originality, as you rightly say. Will do some homework on commercial tracks too. Just waiting for a bit of inspiration (which will be along soon, I hope…).
MODS – I’ve just read the rules for this forum area (I should have done before now, sorry) and I’m not really supposed to be posting requests for advice here – do I need to have this thread moved at all?
Cheers,

tim.gosdenParticipantThis is what this forum is for – I believe.
For people to post tracks and get feedback!
Keep up the good work, looking forward to your next track
Cheers, Tim.
