CiTyCHiLDParticipantI think finding the key of the acapellas would be great thanks, and it would also be nice if some one would put the bpm of the song also.

danm77Participantit would be useful, like bpm,but nevertheless wouldnt matter too much as its what sounds good on the ears, different tones etc can create a totally different feel but still be in tune

TsilidjayParticipantIt would be much of a help!!!some people like me don’t really know harmonics and stuff so knowing the key would be o f great help!
AdSense 336x280April 22, 2010 at 9:26 am #679078
djespressoParticipantTheres a program for mac called "beatunes" for helping you find keys and bpms….its not perfect but it saves time.
AdSense 336x280April 23, 2010 at 8:43 pm #679098
fazParticipantWhat would you need the key for? As bootleg/mash-up/remix artists, being able to tell what the correct key needs to be is pretty much a foundation skill that we should all have already. I would say if people dont have this basic skill then they will struggle with the whole process.
If some people will appreciate this then I vote yes, any additon has to be positive but just can’t understand the reason for it.

fazParticipantdanm77 wrote:it would be useful, like bpm,but nevertheless wouldnt matter too much as its what sounds good on the ears, different tones etc can create a totally different feel but still be in tuneI disagree, there can only be one ‘right’ way without a vocal sounding out of key. You can’t just choose any old key and use that cos it sounds good to you. It may work in the bedroom situation but not in a club.

And also I’ve been on the bootleg scene for seven years now and there are loads of people who started out making stuff that’s wildly out of key (and out of time) but have improved over the years… it is possible to train your ears to hear key clashes etc. This database will help them.

ha – I have it the other way round! Stuff that works in clubs can sound horribly out of key in the bedroom – for example I did a Guns ‘n’ Roses/Whitney Houston bootleg in 2003 which had pretty bad feedback on GYBO, but A+D still play it at Bootie to this day!
I call it the "booze-tinted speakers" effect 😉

Fair point. Sounds good that one, 2 of my faves. Whitney for the cheese factor and the Roses for my metal days. Wouldnt mind a listen.

IMO knowing "The Key" can sometimes hinder creativity. All keys are relative, for example G and E minor have all the same notes. The key you perceive is dependent upon which notes are stressed. Either key would be tonally correct, and there are five other modes with identical notes to those two only stressing different harmonic patterns. Further, in many cases a melody might not use all the notes in a particular key. The omission of a single note would allow you to change key say from Bflat to Eflat for example and still have complete consonance.
For the sake of creativity I think it’s best to rely on your ears. Do what you think sounds good.
If Key labeling helps some then go for it but I’ll be ignoring it.AdSense 336x280April 28, 2010 at 8:14 am #679166
shadow72hhhParticipantwhy not it would help me with my mixing.

AdSense 336x280May 4, 2010 at 6:17 pm #679292
chihuahuacondaParticipantHmm It’s definitely conditional. Many vocal tracks (a lot of rap) won’t need it unless you want to use the original song and then you’re own bits. Or vocoder/auto-tune etc. but for me personally, 9/10 times it’s extremely useful. Plus, better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. And I agree with ChunkyEatsMyDinner…it’s almost as useful (if not equally as useful) as the bpm info.

ChampinessParticipantThis would definitely be a big help. When I start looking for acapellas (mashups/etc.) it’s not always with a specific song in mind. So it’d be great if I could look around and find an acapella in a key to match the song I’m using, to "stumble upon" a good match, if you will. Though I understand it would definitely be a hassle – so only if it’s feasible!
AdSense 336x280July 1, 2010 at 4:38 pm #680694
djliambroadParticipantpossibly the most important about putting a vocal on a track is ensuring the track is in the correct key…so a thumbs up from me on this idea
AdSense 336x280July 26, 2010 at 12:25 pm #681364
