Hi there, I’m in the process of finishing the basement into some proper studio space and am seriously considering switching from my aging PC to an iMac for my audio and video needs. I realize the Mac Pro is the best option, but after the money I’m dumping into renos there’s just no frigging way I could afford it. I am considering the 24" iMac as an option, like this one…

Any opinions? I primarly work with Reason, possibly going to try out Logic and some others. I’ll also need PhotoShop and some kind of video editing software for it. I use Corel VideoStudio on the PC, not sure if there is a Mac friendly equivalent.

What do y’all think?

Depending on how savvy you are with video editing. there’s iMovie. or the daddy, Final Cut Pro.

So i wouldn’t worry about video editing software. The only reason a Mac would be justified is if you will be using a lot of mac-only software (i.e. logic) regularly.

If you’re going for a spanking new mac that’s got an intel chip then there’s obviously the best of both worlds (mac/pc) provided you’ve got a high speed (dual-core probably) processor, HUGE amount of RAM and hard drive space.

Have you looked at the towers as an option? I don’t really rate the iMac all that much coz i can’t take it apart to add an additional HD (if i wanted to)…but that’s just me..i’m destructive like that.

I use Logic myself and it works great! I would recommend it for anyone! Then again, I’ve never used anything but Logic so I’m not to sure how hard the transition would be. I can tell you that once I bought my first mac it was a little hard to get used to but I eventually found that it is in a way simpler to use. I think you will be pleased once you get used to it.

The one you have picked out is pretty nice… If only I could afford the upgrade…

Depending on how deep you are into audio and video editing and your budget you might consider the upgraded processor and ram just so you don’t have to do it later!

Mac is good choise for music and graphix, though please note that the iMac doesn’t offer many possibilities to expand, you absolutely can’t use any PCI card, and if you are already using a firewire audioboard you will likely not be able to use a firewire dsp in daisychain

in addition to icdigital post, assume also that the power of imacs is not comparable with his major bro, the mac pro. i have both the two machines but definitely produce music only onto the mac pro.
is faster a lot. but if you dont use it for professional purposes, maybe the imac can be good enough.

Hmm, I would disagree with you 4tm, I use beefy, and I do mean BEEFY mac pro’s at work which are mainly used for hard core video editing, motion graphics and 3d modelling and running Logic on them is pretty much the same as running it on my 24" 3.06 Intel Core 2 Duo w/ 2Gb RAM. On a day to day music production I see no real difference. The only time I would consider the Mac Pro in a total advantage is if I was running some massive piano/orchestral sample patch but to be honest, I never do. Oh and my day job is creating music for video production.

i had a macpro then i switched to i mac and tell u the truth it really helped me speed wise now i feel like my programs work smoother

judging from the fact the original post was 5 years ago, i guess you’ve made your decision by now, but i just want to say to anyone who’s considering getting an imac to seriously go for it. it’s exceeded my expectations. every computer i’ve owned before has slowed down after about a year, but the imac is still easily fast enough even after everything i’ve put it through. logic works like a dream still
