vice versesParticipantokay peeps..
so this might seem a bit of a rant… and yes it is…
When being brought up on "rap music" i was always led to believe that the term hip hop was the lifestyle… krs one said it with.. "rap is something you do.. hip hop is something you live"
So Hip hop being the elements of the culture… ie: graffiti, mcing, djing, break dancing, (and err is the last one fashion??)
Well my issue is that way too many people are throwing this whole.. "that aint hip hop" at music.. well absolutely right… its RAP. Very few performers these days encapsulate the elements of hip hop… and it makes my heart skip a beat to hear a scratch in a record these days. When will everyone realise that Hip Hop is the culture. and not the music
AAARgggh, sorry ill stop ranting now, but is anyone with me on this? lol

repo136ParticipantI hear that. Makes me mad when the music is labelled as ‘hip hop and rap’.
If you’re gonna call it that then at least tell me what you think the difference is!!And while I’m on my soapbox, another thing that grinds my gears is when people talk about ‘old skool’ hip hop and then proceed to mention Snoop Dog, Dilated People, De La Soul, 3rd Bass, Diamond D…etc…
WTF??! Old school is 1983 and before IMO.AdSense 336x280November 18, 2009 at 6:52 pm #674183

estaloca311ParticipantWell I agree that hip-hop is supposed to be the culture that includes "rap music". Rap isn’t a culture , it’s a format. You can say that rap is a way of vocalising. All these Lil’s and Slims and Gz (pick your own flavour and grammar) and whatnot are obviously rapping (as in rhythmically chanting their bs in a spoken word format , not in singing) but I can’t see how can they be "hip-hop". How much does lil bow wow or whoever represent a b-boy or a graffiti artist? And I agree with vice verses on the scratch issue. To hear scratching you either need to buy "turntablist" music (most of which is way too much scratching imo) or go back in time and listen to some real ish from the 90s and 80s.

backdraftproductionsParticipanti look at it like "Hip Hop" implies "Hip Hop Music" ie "Rap"
